From The Shadows By Neil White

From The Shadows By Neil White

neil
He hides in the shadows, watching, waiting, until the time is right . . .

Mary Kendricks, a smart, pretty, twenty-four-year-old teacher, has been brutally murdered and Robert Carter is accused of killing her.

When defence lawyer, Dan Grant inherits Carter’s case only weeks before the trial starts, everyone expects him just to babysit it, but Dan’s not that kind of lawyer. He’ll follow the evidence – wherever it takes him.

But as Dan and his investigator Jayne Brett look into the case, they discover that there is more to it than meets the eye. In order to do their jobs they need to push the limits of the system, even if it means putting themselves in danger.

Together they will get to the truth – whatever the cost . . .

My Thoughts:

I had never read any of Neil’s books before and was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I did find the beginning a little slow but once I had got over that, there was no stopping me. This book had me guessing till the very end, lots of brilliant characters and a superb plot.

It’s Just Better … in a Bowl! By Debra Abeling

It’s Just Better … in a Bowl! By Debra Abeling

debra

Cooking real food has many health benefits for you and your family, and it’s just better eaten out of a bowl. This book will teach you what real food is, why use a bowl, and how to stock a healthy pantry and kitchen.

You will also learn healthy substitutions, ingredients for building a healthy bowl, along with meal prepping ideas.

There are many recipes using simple real ingredients to make breakfast, soup and stew, salad, dinner, and dessert bowls. It’s just better cooking real food that is served in a bowl.

My Thoughts:

This is the first time I have been asked to review a cookbook. I love to cook and really think that reviewing cookbooks is the way forward as I don’t think they get enough reviews but that is just me personally.

I think this cookbook is brilliant for people that are just learning to cook, students or people that want to become healthier. There are some great tips in the book about why a bowl is better and I did have to agree with them, like it helps with portion control. Even though it is an american cookbook you can still get most of the ingredients in the UK. There are a few different recipes going from making a salad, to cooking meat to puddings. I am definitely going to try making some of the puddings. The only thing I would say about this book is that I would prefer to have more pictures of the end product so that you can see what you are working towards as that always helps. I think it would also benefit people who aren’t use to cooking too.

The One By John Marrs

The One By John Marrs

the one

How far would you go to find THE ONE?

One simple mouth swab is all it takes. A quick DNA test to find your perfect partner – the one you’re genetically made for.

A decade after scientists discover everyone has a gene they share with just one other person, millions have taken the test, desperate to find true love. Now, five more people meet their Match. But even soul mates have secrets. And some are more shocking – and deadlier – than others…

My Thoughts:

With a new dating app that matches people to their perfect partner what could possibly go wrong? This book starts like you would assume but then the twists and turns come thick and thin, I didn’t want to put the book down as I was scared what I was going to discover next. A brilliant concept for a book.

The Girls By Emma Cline

The Girls By Emma Cline

the girls

If you’re lost, they’ll find you…

Evie Boyd is fourteen and desperate to be noticed.

It’s the summer of 1969 and restless, empty days stretch ahead of her. Until she sees them. The girls. Hair long and uncombed, jewelry catching the sun. And at their centre, Suzanne, black-haired and beautiful.

If not for Suzanne, she might not have gone. But, intoxicated by her and the life she promises, Evie follows the girls back to the decaying ranch where they live.

Was there a warning? A sign of what was coming? Or did Evie know already that there was no way back?

My Thoughts:

I found the start of this book quite slow but then it picked up a little. I wasn’t overly keen on how graphic some of the sex parts were going to be. I just found it a little weird not really for me but I am sure others will like it.

When Hope Calls By David Lui

When Hope Calls By David Lui

when hope calls

One phone call.

One kidnapped girl.

One impossible rescue mission.

When the staff of a human rights NGO receive a call from a distraught girl, Mya, claiming she had been kidnapped, they are thrown on a gut-wrenching quest. They don’t know who she is. They don’t know where she is or her destination. All they have is a phone connection. Every clue draws them closer to her rescue…or pushes them to frustration. Within the next twelve hours, they must each make daring sacrifices and be tested to their limit.

The clock is ticking, the odds are against them…will they be able find Mya?

Based on a true story, this gripping novella will draw you into the world of human trafficking NGO work. When the action is over and the smoke fades, one question remains: What will YOU do?

My Thoughts:

This is a short story of about 60 pages, the topic is human trafficking which I didn’t know much about. It reminded me of what hope is and to hold on to it. I found the characters were well written and the story was well written too. It makes you think that human trafficking happens alot more often than you think and in many different countries.

Rosie’s Little Cafe on the Riviera By Jennifer Bohnet

rosie

My Thoughts:

The cover of this book made me feel so happy and wanting our Summer to come back. I loved the story and I loved all the characters. This is my first book by Jennifer Bohnet but I am sure I will be purchasing more of hers very soon. Such a feel good story which I didn’t want to end.

A Spell in Provence By Marie Laval

A Spell in Provence By Marie Laval

51n4mvTI+OL

After losing her job in England, Amy Carter uses her redundancy payment to start a new life in France, turning Bellefontaine, an overgrown Provençal farmhouse, into a successful hotel. Though she has big plans for her new home, none of them involves falling in love — least of all with Fabien Coste, the handsome but arrogant owner of the nearby château.

As romance blossoms in the beautiful Provençal countryside, disturbing events at the farmhouse hint at a dark mystery — a destructive, centuries-old attachment between the ladies of Bellefontaine and the ducs de Coste. As Amy struggles to unravel the mystery, she begins to wonder if it may not just be her heart at risk, but her life too.

My Thoughts:

I liked the way this story was written, I felt as though it was very descriptive with a romance but mystery element involved. I found it fast moving but with a predictable ending. The setting sounded beautiful and almost makes me want to go to Provence. The cover looks lovely with a hint of mystery.

A Stranger in the House By Shari Lapena

A Stranger in the House By Shari Lapena

shari lapena

Why would you run scared from a happy home?

You’re waiting for your beloved husband to get home from work. You’re making dinner, looking forward to hearing about his day.

That’s the last thing you remember.

You wake up in hospital, with no idea how you got there. They tell you that you were in an accident; you lost control of your car whilst driving in a dangerous part of town.

The police suspect you were up to no good. But your husband refuses to believe it. Your best friend isn’t so sure. And even you don’t know what to believe . . .

My Thoughts:

Having read Shari’s previous novel The Couple next door I was excited to read this one. It has everything to keep you hooked, twists, turns and a creepy neighbour. Reading this book I honestly couldn’t of told you what would happen next. I felt anxious reading it as I just didn’t know how the ending was going to be played out. I found this book utterly compelling.

amanda

Nina McCarrick lives the perfect life, until her husband, Finn, is killed in a car accident and everything Nina thought she could rely on unravels.

Alone, bereft and faced with a mountain of debt, Nina quickly loses her life of luxury and she begins to question whether she ever really knew the man she married. Forced to move out of her family home, Nina returns to the rundown Southampton council estate—and the sister—she thought she had left far behind.

Torn between the life she thought she knew and the reality she now faces, Nina finally must learn what it means to take control of her life.

My Thoughts:

Can I just say how stunning the cover of this book is. The purple is so eye catching and pretty. I have not read many of Amanda’s books and am starting to ask myself why. Tissues are definitely needed with this book, I cried at the beginning, Amanda has a way with her words that are sympathetic and heart felt. I felt as through this book was true to life and couldn’t ever imagine what Nina goes through but it happens. I felt as though I really cared for Nina and her boys and was willing them to get back up and find their feet. A truly beautiful read.
