The Little Bakery on Rosemary Lane By Ellen Berry

The Little Bakery on Rosemary Lane By Ellen Berry

Prepare to fall in love with beautiful village of Burley Bridge.

Growing up in a Yorkshire village, Roxanne Cartwright couldn’t wait to escape and make her place in the world. Now, thirty years later, she’s a fashion editor living a glamorous life of perennial singlehood in London – or so it seems to her sister Della. But when Roxanne finds her career under threat, she feels herself pulled back to the quiet village she’d been so desperate to leave.

As Roxanne reacquaints herself with life on Rosemary Lane, she slowly makes a surprising discovery: the people who live in Burley Bridge are, well, just people – different from the fashion set she’s used to, but kind and even interesting. Michael, a single dad trying to make a go of a small bakery, particularly so. Little by little, cupcake by cupcake, Roxanne and Michael fall into an unexpected friendship.

Could there be a life for Roxanne after all, in the place she’s spent years trying to escape?

My Thoughts:

This is the second book in the Rosemary lane series, the first book is called The bookshop on Rosemary Lane. The main character is Roxanne and she is a fashion editor living the high life but when a new boss comes in, her career may not be as it seems. She decided to go and stay with her sister Della and the quiet village she left behind. I felt slightly disappointed that it wasn’t really centred around the bakery, yes there is a mention of a bakery and a few other things but I was hoping for a bit more. I like the fact that we see characters from the first book popping up. I found the bookshop slightly taking over this book.

I was given an advanced copy of this book for an honest review.

Here is a recipe from the lovely Ellen Berry just for you:

Easy-peasy Lemon and Lime Cake / Ellen Berry

I love this cake because it’s so simple to make – and so delicious. Kids might think it’s a little plain, but that means there’s all the more for you. With the lemon and lime flavours it’s not cloyingly sweet – and you can try it with oranges instead, which is just as delicious.

As a novice baker, with more than my share of failures, I treasure simple, quick recipes – this takes no more than 15 minutes to knock together.

You’ll need:

230 g softened unsalted butter

230 g golden caster sugar

4 eggs

175 g self-raising flour

1 tsp baking powder

20 g ground almonds

Granulated sugar for sprinkling on top

Grated rind and juice of 1 lemon and 2 limes

(Or 2 oranges)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C/Gas 4. Grease a 20cm cake tin and line the base with a circle of baking parchment.
  2. Put the butter, caster sugar and eggs in a large mixing bowl and sift in the flour and baking powder.
  3. Add the lemon and lime rind and beat until blended.
  4. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until lightly golden and a metal skewer comes out clean from the centre of the cake.
  5. Remove from oven. Leaving the cake in its tin, sprinkle with granulated sugar and dribble over the lemon and lime juice. Allow to cool in its tin, then remove and serve in dainty slices.

She’ll risk everything for her own Christmas miracle…

Determined to conquer a lifetime of shyness, Harriet Knight challenges herself to do one thing a day in December that scares her, including celebrating Christmas without her family. But when dog-walker Harriet meets her newest client, exuberant spaniel Madi, she adds an extra challenge to her list – dealing with Madi’s temporary dog-sitter, gruff doctor Ethan Black, and their very unexpected chemistry.

Ethan thought he was used to chaos, until he met Madi – how can one tiny dog cause such mayhem? To Ethan, the solution is simple – he will pay Harriet to share his New York apartment and provide 24-hour care. But there’s nothing simple about how Harriet makes him feel.

Ethan’s kisses make Harriet shine brighter than the stars over moonlit Manhattan. But when his dog-sitting duties are over, and Harriet returns to her own home, will she dare to take the biggest challenge of all – letting Ethan know he has her heart for life, not just for Christmas?

My Thoughts:

I am a big fan of Sarah Morgan’s books they never fail to put a smile on my face. This story is all about Harriet, to get an understanding of the other characters you must read Sarah’s previous novels. There is a certain warmth that brings these books to life. I loved Harriet she is conquering her fears and meets a certain sexy doctor but will he bring romance into her life? A book I could not put down.

The Picture House By the Sea By Holly Hepburn

The Picture House By the Sea By Holly Hepburn

holly hepburn

The picture house by the sea is the Palace at Polwhipple – a lovely art deco cinema, nestled in front of azure Cornish seas. But it is long past its heyday now, and its only saving grace is Ferrelli’s, the family run ice-cream concession in the foyer, which is widely known as the best ice-cream for miles.

So when Ferdie, the owner of Ferelli’s, breaks his leg, his granddaughter Gina drops everything to come and help out. But when she arrives she is dismayed by the state of the cinema, which she remembers fondly from summer holidays when she was little, and she is determined to give it the makeover it deserves.

Along with local renovation expert Ben, she sets about reviving the Palace to its former glory.
But the cinema needs more than a lick of paint. Its very future is  under threat from a developer with greed in his eyes. Can Gina save the place before it is too late?

My Thoughts:

The picture house by the sea is a wonderful read, I love the concept of the book and how Gina comes to help out her grandfather’s business. The idea of inventing ice cream flavours to go with the films is pure genius and I loved reading about the ice cream side of it. There is plenty of drama and romance that will have you swept of your feet.

This was originally published as four separate novella’s in e- book format.

This title will be released on 29th September

Daisy Jones has hit rock bottom. Or so she believes.

A cheating boyfriend, trouble at work, having to move back in with her mother, and being forced to compare her brother’s loved-up, newly-wed status and brand-new shiny house with her own dire lack of prospects, isn’t what she imagined her life was going to be like at thirty.

To top it all off, Christmas is just around the corner!Daisy, bless her, thinks things can’t possibly get any worse, but when her ancient great-grandmother persuades her to plant a silver sixpence in the Christmas pud for luck, Daisy is about to discover that they most definitely can.

My Thoughts:

You may think it is too early for a Christmas read but think not. It is not too long now till Christmas so what better way to get started than to start reading a festive book. I am a big fan of Lilac Mills and I think everyone should read her books. This read made me want to curl up and forget my daily woes. I loved Daisy, I could definitely see myself in her and I loved her great grandmother and her traditions. It made me start thinking about Christmas and my family. A lovely read.

You think your children are safe.

But are they really?

Midsummer night: a thirteen-year-old girl is found unconscious in a dark corner of the garden square. What really happened to her? And who is responsible?

My Thoughts:

I am a bit obsessed at the moment reading all of Lisa Jewell’s books, after her latest book Then She Was Gone was released I wanted more from this incredible author and I certainly got it with her other books. The storyline was like no other which kept me turning the pages even though I should of been asleep. Lisa has a way where every chapter your about to finish on leaves something so you just want to read on and find out what is going to happen next. Looking forward to reading more of Lisa’s books.

My Thoughts:

There are some intriguing characters in the book that caught my attention, you suspect everyone but who was it really? A book I would highly recommend.

The Hating Game By Sally Thorne

The Hating Game By Sally Thorne

hating game

Lucy Hutton, baker-of-cakes, exemplary assistant and professional ‘nice girl’, is waging war. She’s got the whole office on her side – except for tall, dark and charmless Joshua Templeman. He’s been nothing but hostile since the moment they met and now it feels like nothing matters as much as taking him down.

Trapped together under the fluorescent lights, they become entrenched in an addictive rivalry. There’s the Staring Game, The Mirror Game, The HR Game. Lucy can’t let Joshua beat her at anything, especially when a huge promotion comes up for grabs.

Finally she’s going to destroy the man she can’t seem to get out of her office, the man she hates, the man who’s taking up far too much space in her head. If Lucy wins, she’ll be Joshua’s boss. If she loses, she’ll resign. The race is on – but the real games have only just begun . . .

My Thoughts:

I found this book quite cheesy, I was expecting alot more laughs than I thought I would. I liked the whole concept of the book as it was a bit quirky but I just didn’t really connect with the characters at all. I just feel as though I wanted a bit more.

My Thoughts:

I wanted a nice summery read as the Summer has now gone. This book cheered me up no end. It was warm, summery, some romance and a whole lot of loving. The story centres around Winnie, Stella and Frankie and you get to find out their stories. It was light hearted and included everything you would want in a beach read.

Summer at the Dog and Duck By Jill Steeples

summer

Ellie Browne has found happiness running The Dog and Duck pub in the idyllic village of Little Leyton, and her blossoming romance with tall, handsome property developer, Max Golding, is going swimmingly. With her new best friend, Digby, the black Labrador at her side, life just couldn’t be sweeter.

But their peace is shattered when Max‘s younger sister, Katy, turns up unannounced with a whole heap of attitude. And Max‘s loyalties are stretched further when his glamorous ex, Sasha, re-appears with her own burgeoning secret.

With the master of the manor preoccupied with the demands of his ‘other women’, Ellie‘s forced to consider if she has any role to play in Max‘s life or in the village of Little Leyton.

Can Ellie get her life and relationship back on track in time for the summer charity ball at Braithwaite Manor?

My Thoughts:

This was my kind of read. I loved all the characters and how they interacted with each other. I fell in love with Digby who is a gorgeous black Labrador. There are a few funny moments, I haven’t read any of Jill’s books before and I knew this was a follow on but I really enjoyed it. I could imagine myself there in the thick of it and I could imagine myself giving lots of cuddles to Digby the dog.
