How can you hate someone in the present and love them in the past?

Fliss’s mum needs peace and quiet to recuperate from a long illness, so they both move to the countryside to live with Margot, Fliss’s stern and bullying grandmother. Life on the farm is tough and life at school is even tougher, so when Fliss unearths Margot’s wartime diary, she sees an opportunity to get her own back.

But Fliss soon discovers Margot’s life during the evacuation was full of adventure, mystery . . . and even passion. What’s more, she learns a terrible secret that could tear her whole family apart . . .

My Thoughts:

I received an advanced copy of this book for an honest review. I love the cover it is so vibrant, it makes you want to dive straight in. This story is about Fliss and how she and her mum( Fliss’s mum isn’t well) go to live with her very stern grandmother. Fliss comes across her grandmother’s diary and can’t help but take a peak. Well she does more than take a peak she reads the whole diary. Expect emotions, love, friendship and ups and downs in this very powerful novel. I really did admire Fliss and all that she did for her mum.  I like how the diary was set out in a different font and learning about what life was like back then for Margot.

Perfect Daughter By Amanda Prowse

Perfect Daughter By Amanda Prowse

Once upon a time, Jacks Morgan had dreams.

She would have a career and travel the world. She would own a house on the beach, and spend long nights with her boyfriend strolling under the stars.

But life had other ideas. First Martha came along, then Jonty. Then her mother moved in, and now their little terrace is bursting at the seams.

Jacks gave up on her dreams to look after her family. If only, just for once, her family would look after her…

My Thoughts:

Not having read any of Amanda’s books before I wasn’t sure what to expect. So in this story we meet Jacks who has two kids called Martha and Jonty and a husband called Pete. Not only does she run the house she also cares for her mother who has dementia. The story is told from the past and present and you get a bigger picture of what life was like for Jacks when she was younger. Be ready for lots of surprises that you would never have guessed in this emotional but beautifully told story. I sure am looking forward to reading more of Amanda’s books.

Rules: Things are Changing at the Little School by the Sea By Jane Beaton and Jenny Colgan

Rules: Things are Changing at the Little School by the Sea By Jane Beaton and Jenny Colgan

For the first time, the girls caught sight of the turreted, castle-like building that would be home for the next nine months, the four towers of the main houses nestled in the hills, with the cliffs behind, leading down to the still turquoise sea.

Maggie loves teaching English at beautiful Downey House but she is less keen on planning her wedding to dependable Stan. Instead, she’s working on ignoring her crush on David McDonald, who teaches English at the local boys’ school.

Just as Simone and Fliss have become friends, Zelda arrives to upset everything. Zelda is loudly, glamorously American, and she’s full of ways to improve life at boring school. Soon, quiet, mousy Simone is undergoing a makeover. And Fliss is about to jeopardise everything to impress a boy.

In a new year at school, the girls of Downey House will be breaking all the rules – and not all of them will escape unscathed.

My Thoughts:

This is the second book in the series and I am absolutely looking forward to the next one. We catch up with Maggie the English teacher and the girls Simone, Fliss and Alice, this series we get to meet new girl Zelda and find out her story.  There is a more serious issue that runs through this book but how it has been written is very sensible and sensitive. I think it has been written really well.

Class: Welcome to the Little School by the Sea By Jane Beaton and Jenny Colgan

Class: Welcome to the Little School by the Sea By Jane Beaton and Jenny Colgan

Maggie went to the window and opened it wide, inhaling the lovely, ozoney air off the sea. Why had she never lived by the sea before? Why had she always looked out on housing estates and not the little white hulls of trawlers bobbing off in the distance?

It’s gloriously sunny in Cornwall as the school year starts at the little boarding school by the sea.
Maggie, the newest teacher at Downey House, is determined to make her mark – but will it be at the expense of her relationship with safe, dependable Stan?

Simone has won a scholarship and wants to make her parents proud. Forced to share a room with the glossy, pretty, clever girls of Downey House, she needs to find a friend, fast.

Fliss is furious at being sent away from her home. As Simone tries desperately to fit in, Fliss tries desperately to get out.

Over the course of one year, friendships will bloom and lives will be changed forever.

My Thoughts:

Not having read any stories about girls at boarding school before I was looking forward to reading this book. There are some great characters in this enjoyable read. These books are part of a series and I cannot wait to get my hands on the rest of them. Some of the girls get up to mischief, one of the girls I felt sorry for and the rest have their own stories to tell. I loved it.

Every family has a story…

But for the Guinness family a happy ending looks out of reach. Olly and Mae’s marriage is crumbling, their teenage daughter Evie is on a mission to self-destruct and their beloved Pops is dying of cancer. Their once strong family unit is slowly falling apart.

But Pops has one final gift to offer his beloved family – a ray of hope to cling to. As his life’s journey draws to a close, he sends his family on an adventure across Europe in a camper van, guided by his letters, his wisdom and his love.

Because Pops knows that all his family need is time to be together, to find their love for each other and to find their way back home…

My Thoughts:

Wow what a powerful story. I felt as though I was part of the family undertaking this big adventure. I cared for the whole family instantly,  and loved Pops so much unfortunately there is a tragedy that left me in tears. I don’t know how the family pull together but they do whilst going on an incredible adventure and journey together. The family all have their little stories about them which brings the whole story together. I was given an advanced copy of this book for an honest review.

Night Shift By Debi Gliori

Night Shift By Debi Gliori

This title will be released on January 12, 2017.

A groundbreaking picture book on depression with stunning illustrations.

With stunning black and white illustration and deceptively simple text, author and illustrator Debi Gliori examines how depression affects one’s whole outlook upon life, and shows that there can be an escape – it may not be easy to find, but it is there. Drawn from Debi’s own experiences and with a moving testimony at the end of the book explaining how depression has affected her and how she continues to cope, Debi hopes that by sharing her own experience she can help others who suffer from depression, and to find that subtle shift that will show the way out.

‘I have used dragons to represent depression. This is partly because of their legendary ability to turn a once fertile realm into a blackened, smoking ruin and partly because popular mythology shows them as monstrous opponents with a tendency to pick fights with smaller creatures. I’m not particularly brave or resourceful, and after so many years battling my beasts, I have to admit to a certain weariness, but I will arm-wrestle dragons for eternity if it means that I can help anyone going through a similar struggle.’

My Thoughts:

I received an advanced reading copy of this book. The cover looks stunning even better in real life. The book is based around the author Debi’s own experiences which to me makes it even more personal. The illustrations inside are exceptional too. I felt I had a real insight into how Debi felt. This book shows people what it is like to have depression, but also to show people that have depression that you can come out the other side and that you are not alone.

beware

Kate O’Brien has always been known as the scholarship kid, running away from a terrible past and overcoming obstacles, some more sinister than others. She’s determined to make a better life for herself. She deserves it. And at the elite Waverly school, Kate is willing to do whatever it takes to climb the social ladder and land her spot at Yale.

As for Olivia, she’s a damaged girl, looking to be mended. She finds something promising in Kate. A study buddy. A best friend. A sister she never had. But even a vulnerable girl like Olivia has her own dark past to contend with.

When the handsome and whip-smart Mark Redkin joins the Waverly administration, he manages to woo the whole student body, paying particular attention to Olivia – an affair she very much wants to keep to herself, especially from Kate. And as a man who knows just how to get what he wants, Kate realises that Mark poses a huge threat, in more ways than she is willing to admit.

My Thoughts:

I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this book. This is a very dark twisted physiological thriller that had me guessing till the very end. There is alot of messed up stuff that happens in this book which I didn’t believe could happen but it does. It is crazy yes but you will want to keep reading on.

Someone is Watching By Joy Fielding

Someone is Watching By Joy Fielding

Bailey Carpenter is a smart and savvy private investigator, until a horrific attack leaves her trapped at home in her Miami high-rise apartment, crippled by paranoia.

Everywhere she looks, she sees the face of her attacker.

Including in the apartment directly opposite her.

Where someone is watching.

My Thoughts:

This is the first book I have read by Joy Fielding and it certainly wont be the last. You know when you get a book and start reading and you just know you are going to enjoy it. How Joy writes is very powerful, I felt for Bailey as what she has gone through is unimaginable. How the story evolves I was thinking it was making her go crazy but is there something more sinister about to happen? There are twists and turns and you will never believe the ending. I didn’t want this book to end.

Trouble Makes a Comeback By Stephanie Tromly

Trouble Makes a Comeback By Stephanie Tromly

trouble
After a fall semester of fiascos: getting arrested, then kidnapped, then blown up in an explosion (all thanks to the weird, but brilliant Philip Digby), Zoe Webster is looking forward to a quiet spring. Now that Digby has left town, she’s finally built a regular high school life for herself. She’s dating Miles; she knows girls she considers friends; she’s learning to enjoy being normal and semi-popular.

Which of course is when Digby comes back: He’s got a new lead on his missing sister and he needs Zoe’s help. Suddenly Zoe is tussling with a billionaire archvillain, locking horns with armed goons, and digging into what makes the Digby family tick, even as she tries to navigate the confusing and emotionally fraught world of high school politics and locker-room drama. After all, it’s hard to explain Digby to a boy like Miles, especially when Zoe isn’t sure how she feels about Digby herself – or how he feels about her.

My Thoughts:

I received this book for an honest review. You can read this book as a standalone but to get some of the characters background I would suggest reading the first book Trouble is a friend of mine. I haven’t read it yet but it is definitely on my list to read. Zoe and Digby are friends somehow dysfunctional and irrational works for them I don’t know how but it does. There are a few characters that intrigued me Sloane was one of them. The plot was completely crazy but it worked. I will be looking forward to reading the next book as I was left wanting more from the ending.
