Twas The Nightshift Before Christmas By Adam Kay

Twas The Nightshift Before Christmas By Adam Kay

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat . . . but 1.4 million NHS staff are heading off to work. In this perfect present for anyone who has ever set foot in a hospital, Adam Kay delves back into his diaries for a hilarious, horrifying and sometimes heartbreaking peek behind the blue curtain at Christmastime.

Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas is a love letter to all those who spend their festive season on the front line, removing babies and baubles from the various places they get stuck, at the most wonderful time of the year.

My Thoughts:

After previously loving This is going to hurt Adam’s previous novel I knew I was in for a real treat with this one. Some of the stories you just can’t believe people would do certain things, but hey they do! If you want an hour or two of escapism and lots and lots of laughs this is the book for you, the only downside for me that it is a short book and I could of done with a lot more stories as Adam writes them so well.

A Wedding in December By Sarah Morgan

A Wedding in December By Sarah Morgan

christmas wedding

In the snowy perfection of Aspen, the White family gathers for youngest daughter Rosie’s whirlwind Christmas wedding.

First to arrive are the bride’s parents, Maggie and Nick. Their daughter’s marriage is a milestone they are determined to celebrate wholeheartedly, but they are hiding a huge secret about their own: they are on the brink of divorce. After living apart for the last six months, the last thing they need is to be trapped together in an irresistibly romantic winter wonderland.

Rosie’s older sister Katie is also dreading the wedding. Worried that impulsive, sweet-hearted Rosie is making a mistake, Katie is determined to save her sister from herself. If only the irritatingly good-looking best man, Jordan, would stop interfering with her plans…

Bride-to-be Rosie loves her fiance but is having serious second thoughts. Except everyone has arrived – how can she tell them she’s not sure? As the big day gets closer, and emotions run even higher, this is one White family Christmas none of them will ever forget.

My Thoughts:

I am always happy when I read another of Sarah Morgan’s books, they are just utter bliss. You can just get snuggled up with a hot chocolate and escape to a world of beautiful scenery and settings. The story is set around the White family and each chapter is a different member of the family. I felt as though I was getting three stories in one which was good. I look forward to Sarah’s next book.

Lexie’s got the perfect life. And someone else wants it…

Lexie loves her home. She feels safe and secure in it – and loved, thanks to her boyfriend Tom.

But recently, something’s not been quite right. A book out of place. A wardrobe door left open. A set of keys going missing…

Tom thinks Lexie’s going mad – but then, he’s away more often than he’s at home nowadays, so he wouldn’t understand.

Because Lexie isn’t losing it. She knows there’s someone out there watching her. And, deep down, she knows there’s nothing she can do to make them stop…

My Thoughts:

I love a creepy read, one that makes you feel shivery. You can’t wait to see what happens next. This story is about two neighbours Lexie and Harriet, they have never met but feel as though they know each other until now. Each chapter alternates between the two women so we find out their story aswell as what they think of each other.  I found the storyline very unique and think Caroline the author has done a brilliant job as this was her debut novel.

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading this book and a new author to me who I will be reading more of. I liked the whole idea of will they? or won’t they? It is a heartfelt and emotional story which made me not want to put it down. The story really pulled at my heart strings and made me realise the importance of friends and family.

World War Two, Poland. Alina and Tomasz are childhood sweethearts. The night before he leaves for college, Tomasz proposes marriage. But when their village falls to the Nazis, Alina doesn’t know if Tomasz is alive or dead.

2019. Life changed beyond recognition for Alice when her son, Eddie, was born with autism spectrum disorder. She must do everything to support him, but at what cost to her family? When her cherished grandmother is hospitalised, a hidden box of mementoes reveals a tattered photo of a young man, a tiny leather shoe and a letter.

Her grandmother begs Alice to return to Poland to see what became of those she held dearest. In Poland, separated from her family, Alice begins to uncover the story her grandmother is so desperate to tell, and discovers a love that bloomed in the winter of 1942. As a painful family history comes to light, will the struggles of the past and present finally reach a heartbreaking resolution?

My Thoughts:

Wow what a powerful and emotional read. I find reading about what happened back in the day with the Nazis and the Jews interesting, this story is set in World War Two and the present day and it is a interesting read. I found it heartbreaking to learn and discover what happened to many many people back then especially when concentration camps came into the story. I found this story had a big impact on me and not one I will be forgetting in a while.

The Family Upstairs By Lisa Jewell

The Family Upstairs By Lisa Jewell

family.jpg

In a large house in London’s fashionable Chelsea, a baby is awake in her cot. Well-fed and cared for, she is happily waiting for someone to pick her up.

In the kitchen lie three decomposing corpses. Close to them is a hastily scrawled note.

They’ve been dead for several days.

Who has been looking after the baby?

And where did they go?

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this creepy read. It is a story that is told very well but your never quite sure where it is going to lead to. It is a unusual story about a mixed family that are bought together by unusual circumstances, I did find it a little confusing when the book tends to jump from character to character, it was hard to keep up with. The storyline was slightly weird but that is what drew me more into the book.  An intriguing read.

Live A Little By Madeleine Reiss

Live A Little By Madeleine Reiss

Two Sisters. One road trip. What could possibly go wrong?

Lottie has always followed the rules, her life is comfortable and she is – finally, finally – marrying her long-term, sensible, boyfriend Dean.

Tina is carefree, wild and, maybe, just a little bit careless. She doesn’t understand Lottie’s obsession with settling down with ‘dull Dean’. There’s so much to explore in the world.

The two sisters have drifted apart since the death of their older sister. Without her, Lottie and Tina realise how little they know each other. Desperate to remedy this, Tina convinces Lottie to set out on a road trip across the US, just the two of them.

But Tina has one more surprise in mind to shake up Lottie’s life – she must say yes to everything Tina suggests, no matter what . . .

My Thoughts:

This is the story of two sisters called Lottie and Tina, we hear about their own personal stories which I am sure some women can relate to. I didn’t feel as though I connected with either sister as I felt as though they were both a little bit selfish in their own ways. I liked the idea of the story how they go on a road trip and get up to all sorts of things. Part of the story is quite emotional and that is when I really felt for the sisters.

Sweet Hollow Women By Holly Tierney-Bedord

Sweet Hollow Women By Holly Tierney-Bedord

sweeet.jpg

As part of a family where life happens to you, fifteen-year-old Carasine Busey is devastated but not surprised when her family drops everything in Sweet Hollow, Louisiana to follow her dad’s shaky career as a welder.

It’s not especially shocking, either, when he abandons them all shortly after they settle into their new home in the city. Carasine, her mom Rhonda, and the rest of the Busey clan have adapted to roll with the punches. From Rhonda’s secret broken heart to Great-Great-Grandpa Jimbo’s eccentric failed dreams, Carasine and her family are used to disappointment.

It’s not until Carasine gets a second chance with an unlikely pair of long-lost relatives that she realizes her path in life might be up to her to navigate. Being their flesh and blood convinces her that there may be some hope for her after all.

My Thoughts:

This is my second book by Holly and it did not disappoint. The story itself is told by multiple people with their own points of view, I thought it may become confusing but it did not. The information from back in the day was detailed and I felt as though it taught me to never give up.

I Will Follow Him: Oceanic Dreams Book 5 By Holly Tierney-Bedord

I Will Follow Him: Oceanic Dreams Book 5 By Holly Tierney-Bedord

A bachelor party on a cruise ship. What could go wrong? When private detective Francie is hired to spy on a groom-to-be as he and his bachelor party set sail for the Caribbean, she thinks she’s landed herself a week of paid vacation.

Between lounging in the sun and sipping margaritas, she just needs to–best case scenario–report back that he’s on the up and up, or–the unfortunate, more likely scenario–snap a few photos of her target in compromising positions, buy a box of sympathy chocolates for her client, and then collect her pay along with a nice golden suntan.Blame it on the island breezes or the alcohol, but within hours of setting sail, Francie’s leisurely vacation gets complicated when she starts making careless mistakes. Like accidentally becoming friends with the groom and falling for his best man.

Can she get herself and her mission back on track, or has she blown her cover and possibly even her career?

My Thoughts:

I love discovering a new author that makes you smile. I found this a nice easy read, I felt as though I was there in the Caribbean with Francie. This is book 5 but all the books can be read as a standalone though now I have read this one, I definitely want to read the others which are written by different authors. This is a book must to get you in the holiday mood.

Innocent By Cathy Glass

Innocent By Cathy Glass

cathy glass innocent.jpg

Innocent is the shocking true story of little Molly and Kit, siblings, aged 3 years and 18 months, who are brought into care as an emergency after suffering non-accidental injuries.

Aneta and Filip, the children’s parents, are distraught when their children are taken into care. Aneta maintains she is innocent of harming them, while Filip appears bewildered and out of his depth. It’s true the family has never come to the attention of the social services before and little Kit and Molly appear to have been well looked after, but Kit has a broken arm and bruises on his face. Could it be they were a result of a genuine accident as Aneta is claiming?

Both children become sick with a mysterious illness while, experienced foster carer, Cathy, is looking after them. Very worried, she asks for more hospital tests to be done. They’ve already had a lot. When Cathy’s daughter, Lucy, becomes ill too she believes she has found the cause of Kit and Molly’s illness and the parents aren’t to blame. However, nothing could be further from the truth and what comes to light is far more sinister and shocking.

My Thoughts:

I get really excited when a new Cathy Glass book comes out. Cathy Glass is a foster carer and the stories she writes are all real life stories. This story is about two very young children called Molly and Kit. It is quite a hard hitting story and bought me to tears a few times. What we discover is truly shocking and unimaginable but thankfully with Cathy’s love and attention we start to see the children thrive. The last chapter had me in tears till the end. I couldn’t believe it. If you haven’t read one of Cathy Glass books before I would say try one as you will never look back.
