The Secretary By Renee Knight

The Secretary By Renee Knight

She knows all your secrets. But will she keep them?

Look around you. Who holds the most power in the room? Is it the one who speaks loudest, who looks the part, who has the most money, who commands the most respect?

Or perhaps it’s someone like Christine Butcher: a meek, overlooked figure, who silently bears witness as information is shared and secrets are whispered. Someone who quietly, perhaps even unwittingly, gathers together knowledge of the people she’s there to serve – the ones who don’t notice her, the ones who consider themselves to be important.

There’s a fine line between loyalty and obsession. And when someone like Christine Butcher is pushed to her limit, she might just become the most dangerous person in the room . . .

My Thoughts:

The first half of this book I found rather slow but more than halfway through it got better, it is all about a secretary who is more than just a secretary. It is about how she gets pushed to her limit, how her family life suffers and also her mental wellbeing. It is a very well thought out story but for me it didn’t hold my attention for long enough.

The Choice By Claire Wade

The Choice By Claire Wade

Imagine a world where…

Everything you ate was monitored by the government.
Every step you took was counted.
Your children were weighed every day at school.
Neighbours reported on neighbours and no one was safe from judgement.
Sugar was illegal, and baking was a crime.

Imagine if that world was here… What would you do?

Toe the line or fight for your freedom…

My Thoughts:

This was an interesting topic to read about, it made me think about the alternative life without sugar and could I possibly do it? I think the author has nailed the female characters as when reading you feel something for them and want their problems to go away. All the time I was reading this book I just wanted to bake or eat something with lots of sugar in it. A fantastic debut novel.

The Assistant By S. K. Tremayne

The Assistant By S. K. Tremayne

s.k.tremayne.jpg

She watches you constantly.
Newly divorced Jo is delighted to move into her best friend’s spare room almost rent-free. The high-tech luxury Camden flat is managed by a meticulous Home Assistant, called Electra, that takes care of the heating, the lights – and sometimes Jo even turns to her for company.

She knows all your secrets.
Until, late one night, Electra says one sentence that rips Jo’s fragile world in two: ‘I know what you did.’ And Jo is horrified. Because in her past she did do something terrible. Something unforgivable.

Now she wants to destroy you.
Only two other people in the whole world know Jo’s secret. And they would never tell anyone. Would they? As a fierce winter brings London to a standstill, Jo begins to understand that the Assistant on the shelf doesn’t just want to control Jo; it wants to destroy her.

My Thoughts:

Wow what a unique story, the story centres around Jo and if she is going mad or is it the assistants? I found this read creepy and unnerving as I think anyone would do if they have a home hub in their home. Some things with these home hubs just don’t sit right with me. I couldn’t for the life of me work out where this story was going to lead and with Jo’s paranoia I wondered what would happen to her and her state of mind. The book is dark and by the final few chapters gets darker and a secret comes out that I couldn’t believe.

I Dare You By Sam Carrington

I Dare You By Sam Carrington

sam carrington.jpg

Mapledon, 1989
Two little girls were out playing a game of dares. Only one returned home.
The ten-year-old told police what she saw: village loner Bill ‘Creepy’ Cawley dragged her friend into his truck and disappeared.
No body was found, but her testimony sent Cawley to prison for murder. An open and shut case, the right man behind bars.
The village could sleep safe once again.

Now…
Anna thought she had left Mapledon and her nightmares behind but a distraught phone call brings her back to face her past.
30 years ago, someone lied. 30 years ago, the man convicted wasn’t the only guilty party.
Now he’s out of prison and looking for revenge. The question is, who will he start with?

My Thoughts:

I hadn’t read any of Sam’s books before so was pleasantly surprised how much this story gripped me. It goes from past to present and is about two little girls that live in a village, when something happens to one of them everyone believes its the village loner who was responsible, but was it? Back to the present and Anna is trying to find out who it really was. This book had me firmly gripped and intrigued.

coral 2.jpg

Five years older. Five years wiser. Five years down the road, we reconnect with Jake and Lori.Over the years since Bonded Souls, the Silver Lake family has grown and the band have seen their career go from strength to strength.

The combination of both results in Shattered Hearts for Jake and Lori and the Silver Lake family. Can they recover from this?

My Thoughts:

I have loved this series and all the characters within the book. In this story we catch up with Lori and Jake ( you need to read the first three books to get a sense of all the characters), their life seems to be going well until tragedy strikes, will they survive it? Another excellent read from a brilliant author.

The Christmas Wish List By Heidi Swain

The Christmas Wish List By Heidi Swain

wish list.jpg
After being let go from her job in a swanky hotel just weeks before Christmas, Hattie is feeling lost. Even more so when her high-flying boyfriend announces he’s landed his dream job in Abu Dhabi and asks her to move with him. Luckily, Hattie’s long-time friend Dolly is on hand to help and invites Hattie to spend one last holiday in the small, festive town of Wynbridge, determined to give her a Christmas to remember . . .

Upon Hattie’s arrival, holiday preparations are in full swing. But for Hattie, whose Christmas cheer has long since run out, it’ll take more than mince pies and mistletoe to open her heart to the season once more. Relishing the task of reigniting Hattie’s Christmas spirit, Dolly suggests they create a wish list of all the things the season can offer, and with the helpful hands of Wynbridge’s resident handyman, Beamish, Hattie finds her frosty exterior is starting to thaw.

As Wynbridge prepares for its most spectacular Christmas yet, will Hattie leave snowy England behind for life in a sunnier clime, or will she in fact realise that her heart’s desire lies much closer to home?

My Thoughts:

Make sure to snuggle up with this festive read where we meet some fantastic characters that will warm your heart. If you go to Wynbridge I am sure you will feel the Christmas spirit that the locals become involved in. I loved Dolly she melted my heart and reminded me of my gran. So kind and caring. A lovely romantic and festive read, you are in for a real treat.

MEET THE NEIGHBOURS YOU’LL LOVE TO HATE

Until Darren and Jodie move in, Lowland Way is a suburban paradise. Beautiful homes. Friendly neighbours. Kids playing out in the street. But Darren and Jodie don’t follow the rules and soon disputes over loud music and parking rights escalate to threats of violence.

Then, early one Sunday, a horrific crime shocks the street. As the police go house-to-house, the residents close ranks and everyone’s story is the same: They did it.

But there’s a problem. The police don’t agree. And the door they’re knocking on next is yours.

My Thoughts:

I am a big fan of Louise’s books, I have loved every single one of them, but this one was slightly different and didn’t hold my attention as much. I loved the storyline, it was original and quirky but it just lacked something, when reading the end I just felt a bit deflated and had hoped for a better ending.

Christmas at Rachel’s Pudding Pantry By Caroline Roberts

Christmas at Rachel’s Pudding Pantry By Caroline Roberts

puds 2.jpg

The first snow is falling over Primrose Farm, the mince pies are warming, and Rachel can’t wait to share a kiss under the mistletoe with her gorgeous new flame, Tom.

If only it was all comfort and joy . . . The arrival of Tom’s ex brings an unwelcome chill to the farm. And despite Master Baker Mum Jill’s valiant efforts, the new pudding pantry business is feeling the pinch.

With a spoonful of festive spirit, a cupful of goodwill with friends, and her messy, wonderful family by her side, can Rachel make this a Christmas to remember?

My Thoughts:

If your in for a festive read, this is the book for you. This one follows on from Rachel’s Pudding Pantry which you should read first to get an idea for all the characters, also it has some fantastic bakes in there too. I love how before each chapter there is a festive bake it makes it more homely. I loved the story and what goes on between Rachel and Tom. You can just imagine pulling up a seat at Primrose Farm for a wonderful Christmas dinner. Its times like this that families should be together and pull together.

Rachel’s Pudding Pantry By Caroline Roberts

Rachel’s Pudding Pantry By Caroline Roberts

puds.jpg

Primrose Farm is Rachel’s very own slice of heaven. Come rain or shine there’s always a pot of tea brewing by the Aga, the delicious aroma of freshly baked puddings, and a chorus of happy memories drifting through the kitchen.

But the farm is in a spot of trouble. As the daffodils spring, Rachel must plant the seeds of change if she wants to keep the farm afloat, and it’s all resting on a crazy plan. She’ll need one family cook book, her Mum Jill’s baking magic – and a reason to avoid her distractingly gorgeous neighbour, Tom . . .

Swapping their wellies for aprons, can Rachel and Jill bake their way into a brighter future? The proof will be in the pudding!

My Thoughts:

What a lovely read, what more can you want when there is romance, cakes and puddings to dream about. Rachel and her family live on Primrose farm and when things get tough she and her family have to decide how to put things right so they set up the pudding pantry, you can just imagine going in there every day to see what delights they have come up with( like Frank does). Also thrown into the mix is their gorgeous neighbour Tom, will love blossom between the two? If your reading this book make sure you have a sweet treat to eat otherwise you will become very hungry.
