One Cornish Summer By Liz Fenwick

One Cornish Summer By Liz Fenwick

liz fenwick

Against the beauty of Cornwall, a story of two women struggling with their past: one cannot remember hers, the other cannot forget…

When Hebe receives a life-changing diagnosis at only 53, she struggles to make sense of what it will mean for her, her job and the man she loves. With memories slipping away by the day, she flees to the one place she has always felt safe and peaceful – Cornwall, and the house her family spent so many summers in.

Lucy is having her own crisis, and seizes the chance to follow her aunt to Cornwall. Curious about what has driven Hebe there after so many years, she also has to battle with the secret she has kept since her family’s last summer there more than ten years ago.

Both women will learn that memories live in our hearts and that sharing secrets can set you free… But can they find their way back to the things that are truly important to them?

My Thoughts:

Liz Fenwick has done it again, she is such a brilliant author and her words transport you to Cornwall where her books are based. You really feel as though you are there in the midst of things. I loved this story and the characters, they seem to come alive with Liz’s descriptive writing. Helwyn House is fictious but it is based on a National Trust property called Godolphin House which I will definitely make time to visit at some point. A must read.

Because Milly’s mother is a serial killer. And blood is thicker than water…

My Thoughts:

I am not sure what to say about this book but it was not for me. It was an interesting storyline but one that did not seem to capture my attention as much as I thought it might. There are a few parts where it gets a bit uncomfortable but thankfully these parts are not in too much detail. I am sure there are people that would enjoy it but it just was not for me.

Million Love Songs By Carole Matthews

Million Love Songs By Carole Matthews

million love songs

After splitting up with her cheating husband, Ruby Brown is ready for a change. She’s single for the first time in years and she’s going to dive into this brave new world with a smile on her face and a spring in her step. The last thing she’s looking for is a serious relationship.
Mason represents everything Ruby wants right now: he’s charming, smooth and perfect for some no-strings-attached fun. Joe on the other hand is kind and attractive, but comes with the sort of baggage Ruby wants to avoid: an annoyingly attractive ex-wife and two teenage children.

Ruby thinks she knows what she wants, is it what she needs to be truly happy?

My Thoughts:

Firstly I have to say how pretty the cover of the paperback is, it has such a beautiful shimmer. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this one and it is a cracker. You will be drawn into this feel good read and wont want to surface until the story is finished. The characters were all brilliant and full of emotion and I think in some ways people will be able to relate to Ruby. I loved the Take That side of the story too it made it more fun. I can’t stop singing Take That songs now.

Charlie and Me By Mark Lowery

Charlie and Me By Mark Lowery

charlie and me

Thirteen-year-old Martin and his younger brother Charlie are on a very special journey. They’re going to be travelling 421 miles all the way from Preston to the very tip of Cornwall. They’re hoping to catch a glimpse of the dolphin that regularly visits the harbour there. But is that the only reason they are going?

It’s a journey that’s full of challenges and surprises. Martin adores his brother Charlie but he’s not like ordinary kids. He’s one in a million. He was born far too early, and ought to have died. And cheeky, irrepressible, utterly unique Charlie is always keeping Martin on his toes – especially on this crazy trip they are now on. Martin is doing his best to be a good big brother, but it’s hard when there’s something so huge coming once they get to Cornwall …

My Thoughts:

I thought this would make a change to the books I had been reading and it did. This is the story of Martin and his younger brother Charlie who decide to go on a journey like no other. I love how the book is set out with Martin’s poems and the lined pages like it really is a book. There are some funny parts to the story but it also deals with some more personal issues which have been dealt with in a sympathetic way. This is a short story and I managed to read it within an hour. I will be looking for more of this author’s books.

How to be Happy By Eva Woods

How to be Happy By Eva Woods

happy

The smallest things can make the biggest difference.

Annie has been sad for so long that she’s forgotten how to be any other way. Until she meets Polly.

Polly is everything that Annie is not. She’s colourful, joyful, happy. Because if recent events have taught Polly anything, it’s that your time is too short to waste a single day.

Polly has one hundred days to help Annie find happiness. Annie’s convinced it’s impossible, but so is saying no to Polly. And on an unforgettable journey, Annie begins to realise that maybe, just maybe, there’s still colour to be found in the world.

But then it becomes clear that Polly’s about to need her new friend more than ever…and Annie will have to decide once and for all whether letting others in is a risk worth taking.

My Thoughts:

If you are going to read this book you need a big box of tissues, I don’t know how anyone can read it without crying. It is such an emotional read that it had me in bits for days. But don’t be put off as it shows you how you can make everyday count and how important your friends and family are in your time of need.

You Were Made for This By Michelle Sacks

You Were Made for This By Michelle Sacks

michelle

This title will be released on June 28, 2018.

In an idyllic house in a Swedish wood, Merry and her husband are building their new dream life with their young baby, far away from events that overshadowed their old life in New York. And they’re happy, aren’t they? Blissfully, blissfully happy.

When Merry’s childhood friend Frances comes to stay, Frances barely recognises her old friend Merry, pureeing baby food, baking, living the Swedish dream. But little by little, cracks begin to show in her carefully constructed fairy tale. And Frances starts to see things others might miss. Dark and treacherous things.

And then a terrible tragedy unfolds…

My Thoughts:

A couple that move to Sweden would have the perfect life there in the countryside wouldn’t they? This is a debut novel that in each chapter is a different person to this dark and twisted story, we watch it unfold with bated breath. I found the story riveting and gripping, one that you wont forget in a while.

Blame it on the Moonlight (Michaelmas Bay Book 2) By Emily Harvale

Blame it on the Moonlight (Michaelmas Bay Book 2) By Emily Harvale

emily harvale

We don’t always get what we want. Luna Blake wants a fresh start. Moving in with her uncle will give her that. She also wants to earn a living from her photographs and paintings of the moon. What she doesn’t want is to fall in love because the last time she did that, it broke her heart in two.

Severine Starr wants to spend as little time as possible visiting her family. She wants to get back to her new man and her new life in New York. She simply needs to persuade her teenage daughter, Raven to go with her. But things at home are far from how she left them. Logan Dorset always wanted to open his own restaurant – and now he is. He also wants a woman he can’t have.

A woman he’s been in love with all his life. A woman who’s in love with someone else. He just wants a chance to tell her how he feels. Roggero Tazzeone disappeared from Michaelmas Bay more than fifteen years ago. Now he’s back and he’s trying to make up for his past mistakes. After all this time, he knows exactly what he wants.

But strange things can happen in the moonlight, and what each of them wants may not be as straightforward as they think.

My Thoughts:

I have read all of Emily’s books and they never fail to cheer me up. This book follows on from book one which is called Christmas secrets in Snowflake cove, we follow some of the old characters and we also get to meet new characters along the way too. The story is well written as are all of Emily’s stories and descriptive which makes you feel as though you are there. It makes you want to read the book in a day which I did.

the fear

This title will be released on March 22, 2018.

But Mike is a predator of the worst kind, and as Lou tries to bring him to justice, it’s clear that she could once again become his prey…

My Thoughts:

If you want to read a psychological thriller at it’s best this is the author for you. Twists and turns at every possible angle makes you slightly breathless as to what will come next. It is a tense and unpredictable that you will not want to put down.

A Long Way from Home By Cathy Glass

A Long Way from Home By Cathy Glass

a long way from home

The true story of 2 year-old Anna, abandoned by her natural parents, left alone in a neglected orphanage.

Elaine and Ian had travelled half way round the world to adopt little Anna. She couldn’t have been more wanted, loved and cherished. So why was she now in foster care and living with me? It didn’t make sense.

Until I learned what had happened. …

Dressed only in nappies and ragged T-shirts the children were incarcerated in their cots. Their large eyes stared out blankly from emaciated faces. Some were obviously disabled, others not, but all were badly undernourished. Flies circled around the broken ceiling fans and buzzed against the grids covering the windows. The only toys were a few balls and a handful of building bricks, but no child played with them. The silence was deafening and unnatural. Not one of the thirty or so infants cried, let alone spoke.

My Thoughts:

I have the deepest respect for Cathy Glass and I think it is amazing what she does. This story like all of her stories is an emotional one, to hear what the orphanage that Anna was in was like was unbearable and really made me tear up. I really felt for Cathy and her family when Anna was being disruptive but I knew Cathy would be able to overcome it with her years of training and looking after other children. I enjoyed this story.

The House Swap By Rebecca Fleet

The House Swap By Rebecca Fleet

house swap.jpg

This title will be released on May 3, 2018.

‘No one lives this way unless they want to hide something.’

When Caroline and Francis receive an offer to house swap, they jump at the chance for a week away from home. After the difficulties of the past few years, they’ve worked hard to rebuild their marriage for their son’s sake; now they want to reconnect as a couple.

On arrival, they find a house that is stark and sinister in its emptiness – it’s hard to imagine what kind of person lives here. Then, gradually, Caroline begins to uncover some signs of life – signs of her life. The flowers in the bathroom or the music in the CD player might seem innocent to her husband but to her they are anything but. It seems the person they have swapped with is someone she used to know; someone she’s desperate to leave in her past.

But that person is now in her home – and they want to make sure she’ll never forget . .

My Thoughts:

This is an eerily creepy book and I think the cover looks creepy too. I couldn’t believe that this is a debut novel it was really good. It had me guessing all the way through, there are many twists and turns but it really keeps you on edge, it kind of makes you a bit breathless. A fantastic thriller. This is an author I will definitely be looking out for in the future.
