The Pharmacist’s Wife By Vanessa Tait

The Pharmacist’s Wife By Vanessa Tait

This title will be released on April 5, 2018.

Love. Desire. Vengeance. A deadly alchemy. When Rebecca Palmer’s new husband opens a pharmacy in Victorian Edinburgh, she expects to live the life of a well-heeled gentlewoman. But her ideal turns to ashes when she discovers her husband is not what he seems.

As Rebecca struggles to maintain her dignity in the face of his infidelity and strange sexual desires, Alexander tries to pacify her so-called hysteria with a magical new chemical creation. A wonder-drug he calls heroin. Rebecca’s journey into addiction takes her further into her past, and her first, lost love, while Alexander looks on, curiously observing his wife’s descent.

Meanwhile, Alexander’s desire to profit from his invention leads him down a dangerous path that blurs science, passion, and death. He soon discovers that even the most promising experiments can have unforeseen and deadly consequences.

My Thoughts:

This book is set in the Victorian era and it is a story about a married couple Rebecca and Alexander. Alexander sets up a pharmacy and he tries to help his wife with hysteria by creating a magical new drug. I did think it was going to be more about the pharmacy side but it was interesting to read about Rebecca’s addiction. I really disliked her husband though, he seemed a very arrogant man who gets what he wants all the time.

Only Child By Rhiannon Navin

Only Child By Rhiannon Navin

only child

We went to school that Tuesday like normal. Not all of us came home . . .Huddled in a cloakroom with his classmates and teacher, six-year-old Zach can hear shots ringing through the corridors of his school.

A gunman has entered the building and, in a matter of minutes, will have taken nineteen lives. In the aftermath of the shooting, the close knit community and its families are devastated. Everyone deals with the tragedy differently.

Zach’s father absents himself; his mother pursues a quest for justice — while Zach retreats into his super-secret hideout and loses himself in a world of books and drawing. Ultimately though, it is Zach who will show the adults in his life the way forward — as, sometimes, only a child can.

My Thoughts:

This is such a powerful story I could not believe it was a debut novel. It is really gut wrenching but how the author has written it like a child would is exceptional. The writing is very descriptive and really draws you into the story. The story flows really well too. I look forward to the next book by this author.

The Shark Club By Anne Kidd Taylor

The Shark Club By Anne Kidd Taylor

shark club

How do you choose between your first love and a sizzling new romance?

On a summer day in 1988, two extraordinary things happen to twelve-year-old Maeve Donnelly. First, she is kissed by Daniel, the boy of her dreams. Then, she is attacked by a shark.

Eighteen years later, Maeve is a world-travelling biologist, swimming with the animals that once threatened her life. She is on the brink of a relationship with a fellow diver. Yet, as she returns to the idyllic island where she grew up, she is haunted by memories of Daniel, her first love, and what might have been.

A meeting with a sweet six-year-old girl fascinated by sharks draws Maeve back into Daniel’s life. Suddenly she’s awash in old feelings. Will she forgive Daniel for the mistakes of their youth? Or will she open her heart to Nicholas, the handsome colleague who shares her passion for the ocean?

My Thoughts:

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this story but I absolutely loved it. It is an interesting story about Maeve and about her love of sharks. I felt as though I learnt a few facts about sharks too. I liked how strong Maeve is and what she stands for. A good all round story with a few interesting shark facts thrown in too.

The Marriage Pact By Michelle Richmond

The Marriage Pact By Michelle Richmond

marriage pact

Would you stake your life on your marriage?

Newlyweds Jake and Alice are offered a mysterious wedding gift – membership of a club which promises its couples will never divorce.

Signing The Pact seems the start to a perfect marriage.

Until one of them breaks the rules.

The marriage of their dreams is about to become their worst nightmare.

Because The Pact is for life.

My Thoughts:

This is a book that is really different, My husband and I have nearly been married a year and when we discussed this book we both said we would never sign something like this even if it meant the promise of never getting a divorce. It is a unique story line but I felt it didn’t grip me for long enough and I felt as though I had to rush the ending as I felt as though it didn’t matter what happened at the end.

The Summer of Second Chances By Maddie Please

The Summer of Second Chances By Maddie Please

maddie please

Lottie is about to discover that even when you think you’ve lost everything, hope and romance can be just around the corner . . .

It takes time to build your life. To get into a long-term (OK, a bit boring) relationship. To find a job (you don’t completely hate). Lottie might not be thrilled with the life she’s put together, but it’s the one she’s got.

So when in the course of one terrible evening, it all comes crashing down around her, Lottie has a choice: give herself over to grief at being broke, single and completely lacking in prospects.

Or, brick by brick, build herself a new life. And this time, with a little help from friends, a crumbling cottage in Devon and a handsome stranger, maybe she can make it the one she always wanted.

My Thoughts:

I loved this nice short easy read. It is such a fun and uplifting read that is pure escapism from everyday life. There are lots of witty one liners that made me giggle and I liked the fact when everything gets too much Lottie reaches for the wine. This is a definite author I would happily read again.

I won this book in a competition.

Stand By Me By S. D. Robertson

Stand By Me By S. D. Robertson

stand by me

They’ll always have each other…won’t they?

Lisa and Elliot have been best friends ever since the day they met as children. Popular, bright and sporty, Lisa was Elliot’s biggest supporter when the school bullies made his life a misery, and for that, he will always be grateful.

Twenty years later, life has pulled the pair apart and Lisa is struggling. Her marriage is floundering, her teenage kids are being secretive, and she’s so tired she can’t think straight. So when Elliot knocks on the door, looking much better than she remembers, she can’t help but be delighted to see her old friend again.

With Elliot back in their lives, Lisa’s family problems begin to improve – he’s like the fairy godmother she never had. As their bond deepens, she realises how much she’s missed him, and prays that this is one friendship that will last a lifetime. But sometimes, life has other ideas…

My Thoughts:

This is an author that will never disappoint, a story that will pull you in and entrance you till the very end. I didn’t want it to finish as I loved the way Lisa and Elliot were together. The story hops from the past to the present where we see how Lisa and Elliot first met to where they are now in their life. I did have a few tears in my eye near the end as I felt as though I really knew Elliot.

Mothers By Cath Weeks

Mothers By Cath Weeks

Would you let your daughter go?

Steffie has always been proud of the decisions she’s made as a mother – even when she battled with her husband’s infidelity and resolved to raise their ten-year-old daughter, Jemima, alone. But when Jemima has the chance to leave home and train as a professional ballerina, Steffie finds herself faced with that most unbearable of parental decisions: should she keep her child safe, or give them the wings to fly?

She knows what’s right. And so does her husband. But when tragedy strikes, can Steffie ever forgive herself?

Especially given the devastating secret she’s kept hidden for so many years…

My Thoughts:

I found the start of this book a bit slow but it did get better, I like the fact that where the book was set in Dorset, Wimborne I know very well as I lived there for a time and my parents live in Dorset. The scary thing was that I have regularly been to the Royal Surrey Hospital too as that is where I am having treatment for endometriosis. I do like a book that has places you know of in it. I loved the bond mother and daughter have between them it is very poignant. Beautifully written.

The Freedom Broker By K. J. Howe

The Freedom Broker By K. J. Howe

freedom

At eight years old, Thea Paris watched her brother being snatched from his bed.

Her inability to save him has haunted both their lives ever since.

Twenty years later, the unthinkable happens when her billionaire father is abducted.

But this time, she is prepared.

Now, Thea is at the top of her game as a freedom broker, negotiating for the release of kidnap victims around the world.

And she has only one objective:

Find him or die trying…

My Thoughts:

I can’t believe how riveting and hooked I became with this story. It is not my usual type of read but I was intrigued when I read that Thea Paris is a hostage negotiator, I thought this sounds interesting and it was. My heart was literally racing to find out what would become, I didn’t want it to end. A cracker of a read and this is the first book in the series so am very excited to see what Thea gets up to next.

This could change everything By Jill Mansell

This could change everything By Jill Mansell

jill mansell

On the one hand, if Essie hadn’t written that letter – the one that only her best friend was meant to see – then she’d still be living like an actual proper grown-up, tucked up with Paul in his picture-perfect cottage, maybe even planning their wedding…

On the other hand (if her true feelings hadn’t accidentally taken the internet by storm, that is) she wouldn’t have moved into the attic flat on the square. She would never have met Conor. Or got to know Lucas…

And she wouldn’t have found herself falling in love with someone she really, really shouldn’t fall in love with…

My Thoughts:

I loved this book so much, it is a warmhearted read with lots of romance. There are a more than a handful of characters and some very interesting ones to say the least. I loved how Zilliah even though she is eighty three years old, she is still getting out there and giving some very deserved people that bit of happiness before their day comes. Such a lovely thing for her to do especially when the other characters pull together to help her out. A heart warming book that will have you wanting to snuggle up under a blanket.

The Endless Beach By Jenny Colgan

The Endless Beach By Jenny Colgan

jenny colgan

On the quayside next to the Endless Beach sits the Summer Seaside Kitchen. It’s a haven for tourists and locals alike, who all come to eat the freshest local produce on the island and catch up with the gossip. Flora, who runs the cafe, feels safe and content – unless she thinks too hard about her relationship with Joel, her gorgeous but emotionally (and physically) distant boyfriend.

While Flora is in turmoil about her relationship. her best friend Lorna is pining after the local doctor. Saif came to the island as a refugee, having lost all of his family. But he’s about to get some shocking news which will change everything for him.

As cold winter nights shift to long summer days, can Flora find her happy-ever-after with Joel?

My Thoughts:

Doesn’t the cover make you want to dive right in? Well it does for me as I am a huge Jenny Colgan fan. If you haven’t read any of her books I would strongly recommend them with a big mug of tea and a biscuit or two. This story is all about life on Mure it follows on from the seaside kitchen where we first meet all the wonderful residents that live there. The characters make you feel as though your part of the community and shows you that no matter what your going through they will always pull together to help you. The added bonus is when you finish the book and there are some cracking recipes to test out yourself.
