Deep As Death(Hella Mauzer) By Katja Ivar

Deep As Death(Hella Mauzer) By Katja Ivar

Hella Mauzer was the first-ever woman Inspector in the Helsinki Homicide Unit. But she’s been fired despite solving her first murder case. This is Helsinki, March 1953. An unusually long and cold winter, everywhere frozen sea, ice-covered lakes and rivers. In a port city flooded with refugees, who cares if a young woman goes missing? An up-and-coming inspector who views this as an opportunity to advance his career. A heartbroken PI with a score to settle. They have yet to discover one thing: the most dangerous lies are those we tell ourselves.

It all begins when Nellie, a prostitute working in a high-end brothel is found floating upside down in Helsinki Harbor. Not exactly a high priority case for the Helsinki police, so homicide chief Jokela passes the job to his former colleague Hella. It’s beginning to look like a serial killer is at work when Elena, another lady of the night, narrowly escapes being driven into the harbor by her 19-year-old john. Problem was he had handcuffed her in the car. And to add further excitement to Hella’s life, the madam is soon found dead in the garden outside the brothel.

What begins like a taut whodunit turns into something more tantalizing and psychological as Hella investigates different suspects, including Steve, the US DJ and love of her life, reluctant to leave his wife for Hella, and the fascinating Inspector Mustonen, charismatic, ambitious and trying desperately to live up to the standards of his high maintenance wife. There are dark powers at play, as well as lighter passages, particularly those involving Anita, voluptuous but savvy, freshly arrived from Lapland to join the Helsinki police force, a most unwanted roommate for Hella. Sadly she too ends up in deep trouble, in a satisfying denouement of twists and turns.

My Thoughts:

This is the Second book in the series, I wish I had read the first one beforehand but I will read it soon. I found this book really good, each chapter is between Hella and Chief Inspector Mustonen. It is a gripping read and it flowed nicely through out. It was an interesting story, Hella is a private investigator who was fired from the police force but why? when a woman is found dead in the harbour in a very Cold Winter Hella decides someone needs to investigate into this and she decides that person is going to be her. The story is set in 1953, in a very bitter and Cold Winter and you can imagine how cold it would of been. I really liked Hella, I think she is smart and got a good shoulder on her head.

Jasper Amazon Parrot Book One, A Rainforest Adventure By Sharon C.Williams

Jasper Amazon Parrot Book One, A Rainforest Adventure By Sharon C.Williams

Jasper is no ordinary parrot.

He lives in the rainforest, which secrets he’s eager to explore. Jasper loves his home and his family, and he’s also in charge of his younger brother Willie – a responsibility Jasper takes very seriously.

When he meets Charlie – a spider monkey with a penchant for food and a laid back attitude – he realizes he’s in for an adventure he never thought possible.   Even if this means getting into danger and worrying his mother to no end.

Exploring the boundaries of the forest, Jasper understands that there is more to the world around him. Who are the strange new creatures that have come there? With Willie and Charlie by his side, he will soon find out.

My Thoughts:

This is the story of Jasper and his brother, who are parrots that live in the Amazon Rain forest. It was lovely to see the Jungle through the parrots eyes and to watch them grow. I think this book is very descriptive which I think is great for children, it is good for children to read by themselves or with an adult. I am not sure what age this book is aimed at but I would say some children might not know what some of the words mean like ruckus or late bloomer. But all in all I think it is a nice gentle read and an educational read as I found I was learning things about the Rainforest that I didn’t know. I look forward to reading book 2 to see what adventures Jasper and hos brother go on next.

As Annabella delves further into the past, she uncovers sides to Tabitha that she never saw coming, and she finds herself asking the question… Was this murder? Or is there more to Tabitha Rice’s story than meets the eye?

My Thoughts:

I like it when you get a book that engages you like this one did for me, I was captivated from the start, When Tabitha disappears, everything points to murder but there are no signs that actually point to a murderer, I was hooked I tried to work out what the logical explanation was but couldn’t get the answers I wanted. Tabitha’s best friend decides to delve deeper and uncovers stuff that she would never imagine, but what happened to Tabitha and can Annabella work it all out before it is too late?

Out of the London Mist By Lyssa Medana

Out of the London Mist By Lyssa Medana

When news of his brother’s murder reached him, aether pilot John Farnley raced back to his old family home.
While he comforts his bereaved sister-in-law, and tries to sort the family business and holdings, he also wonders why his brother, Lord Nicholas Farnley, had ventured into the cramped streets of the East End of London where he had met his violent end. The slums are a deadly place where life was cheap and murderous thugs preyed on the weak and lost.

Now, in the midst of a thick, London fog, something even more monstrous is waiting in the mist-shrouded shadows. Something that has been brought to life by the refugees crowding Bethnal Green and Mile End. Something his brother might have had a hand in creating.
Aided by his friend, the resourceful Miss Sylvia Armley, his own understanding of the aether lines that flow above London, and guided by the erudite advice of Professor Entwistle, John is forced to find his way through the darkest part of London to avenge his brother and stop whatever aether powered monster is lurking there.

My Thoughts:

Even though this is not my usual genre I decided to take a leap and read it anyway. What more could I ask for? I love London and hearing about all the places where I have been or know, it brings a kind of special quality to a book I think. I found it fast paced with some good characters, even though I have never read a steam punk mystery before I will be more inclined to read one in the future. This book really opened my eyes to what life was like in London during the “London Peculiars”. Made for a really good read. I will be intrigued to see what Lyssa writes about next.

The Temple House Vanishing By Rachel Donohue

The Temple House Vanishing By Rachel Donohue

Power. Jealousy. Desire.

Twenty-five years ago, a sixteen-year-old schoolgirl and her charismatic teacher disappeared without trace…

When Louisa arrives at Temple House, an elite catholic boarding school, she quickly finds herself drawn to sophisticated fellow pupil Victoria and their young bohemian art teacher, Mr Lavelle. The three of them form a bond that seems to offer an escape from the repressive regime of the nuns who run the cloistered school. Until Louisa and Mr Lavelle suddenly vanish.

Years later, a journalist with a childhood connection to Louisa determines to resolve the mystery. Her search for the truth will uncover a tragic, mercurial tale of suppressed desire and long-buried secrets. It will shatter lives and lay a lost soul to rest.

My Thoughts:

The picture doesn’t do the cover any justice, in real life it is absolutely beautiful with a gold foil effect. Really brings the book to life. A teenage girl goes missing with her teacher, as we get more into the story we find that not everything is as it seems, did they run away together or did something else happen? I felt as though it was quite a long drawn out story but I wanted to see what had really happened to Louisa and Mr Lavelle. The ending was good and it left me wondering did the reporter report it or not?

Chasing Ginger: A Steamy BBW Billionaire Rom Com (Misfits Series Book 1) By Marie Lavender

Chasing Ginger: A Steamy BBW Billionaire Rom Com (Misfits Series Book 1) By Marie Lavender

Chased by a group of angry men. Saved by quite a hunk.

This is not the résumé Ginger Halloway ever imagined having. But thanks to a miracle pill, which makes her size 22 body instantly sexy, that’s what happened.

Yet, now Lance Franklin is showing interest in her, and she can’t figure out if he really likes her for her, or if it’s just because of a bizarre drug.

And her wild bunch of friends, The Misfits…well, they’re always getting her into some interesting situations.

So, yep, business as usual. Except for the guy. What the hell should she do about him?

As for Lance, he believes he’s lucky to have found Ginger. But can he convince her they should go for it?

With some new attention from the hottest guy she’s ever met, Ginger can’t help but wonder…is this all too good to be true?

My Thoughts:

This book does come with a content warning for foul language and steamy scenes. Ginger is a full figured gutsy woman who has come to the realisation that she is never going to be the right size so decides to take a chance on a diet pill, what she doesn’t realise though that this pill makes men come at her like a magnet. It is a really funny story and I couldn’t stop laughing, it is a well written story with a unique story line, the only thing I worried about was the fact that the men wouldn’t leave Ginger alone. It is an issue I think that many women struggle with including myself. I think it has been written well. I look forward to book 2 in the misfits series.

Both having braved the worst the world had to throw at them, the pair quickly form an unbreakable bond. They picture their future as an endless stream of adventures filled with love, laughter, and good times.

But life has one last cruel trick to play…

My Thoughts:

I needed something a little different to read and this book cropped up and I felt like it was fate, I love the fact it is about a dog as I am a huge animal lover and jump at the chance of reading a book with animals in it and that is is seen through the eyes of a dog, that makes it more interesting and funny. This is story of a young girl who after suffering her own tragedy, she comes across an injured dog and knows she has to help him, I love the bond between the girl and the dog. They have such a lovely relationship together and it is lovely to see, the ending was sad.

Book Blogger Directory 2020 By Deena Rae Schoenfeldt

Book Blogger Directory 2020 By Deena Rae Schoenfeldt

This Book Blogger Directory lists blog addresses, contact information, where reviews are posted, as well as standard turnaround time and book formats accepted. Indexes list bloggers by accepted genre so you can easily find bloggers amenable to your subject matter.

My Thoughts:

A different type of book for me to read and review but one I feel as though should be reviewed. I am very grateful for the fact that I am listed as a book blogger in this book and I think it is a really good idea and very handy for those authors and publishers to get in touch with book bloggers, it is easy to use and a good layout. I have already had a number of authors contacting me saying they found me in this book which is great, however I would like to point out I think the book needs a key at the front as I think people are confusing the cross x with meaning that book blogger doesn’t review that type of book etc. I feel as though a tick ✔ would be better as it is less confusing. I have had requests from authors of books that I don’t actually read I feel as though it is because this is a little confusing. But all in all I think it is a brilliant idea and I am proud to be in it.

Being Alert By Charlie Laidlaw

Being Alert By Charlie Laidlaw

Being Alert! begins in January 2020 as the British prime minister, Winston Spragg, first learns about a new illness that seems to be centred in a city in China that nobody has heard of.

Following in a long tradition of British satire, the book populates Downing Street and Whitehall with an inept prime minister presiding over a dysfunctional government as it deals with an existential threat that rapidly becomes a national crisis.

Like satires before it, the book uses humour to paint an uncomfortable picture of a government seemingly as concerned about justifying itself as working to protect the country.

My Thoughts:

I have read Charlie’s previous novel The Things We Learn When We Are Dead and enjoyed it, this one is set in London and is to do with the current situation that is all around the world. This story shows how the people in charge go about how to deal with this threat. I found it an interesting and kind of going behind the scenes look into how the government deal with a crisis as big as it is. It is a big debate as to what the government are doing and aren’t doing and it begs the question have they and are they doing enough? . It really made me think about the world we live in, how the government are dealing with the situation at the moment and what they need to do to make it better and how we can help each other.

My Darling By Amanda Robson

My Darling By Amanda Robson

amanda robson

A new couple moves in next door.
And nothing will ever be the same again…

I watched you move in and thought we might be friends.

I saw you watching from the window – and knew I’d have to keep you away from my husband.

I started to trust you. Confide in you.

I started to mistrust you. Suspect you.

I was confused when I blacked out after an evening at your place. Was I really that drunk?

I came up with a plan. A plan to make you both pay . .

My Thoughts:

A fast paced and sinister story that will have you on the edge of your seat in anticipation. I found this story very intense and creepy but I couldn’t put it down. Amanda writes with such passion and includes lots of information that keeps the reader interested. With Amanda’s books you can never guess what is coming and that is what I really like about her books. A true masterpiece by a brilliant author.
