Bobby and Bubba’s Small Adventure By Anthony Coombs

Bobby and Bubba’s Small Adventure By Anthony Coombs

The biggest celebrity cult since ‘Made in Chelsea’Bob Marley and Roman Abramovich, the two brothers have already appeared on TV, magazines and their own Instagram page without letting on just how really naughty they are.

These are their little stories…written for children of all ages, particularly if you’re a parent looking for a way to break the vice-like grip of the iPhone and the internet on growing minds. They’re lovable, funny, poignant and even a tiny bit exciting – much like Bobby and Bubba themselves. Hope you love them as much as we all do!

My Thoughts:

This was such a lovely story about two British Bulldogs called Bobby and Bubba, they really made me smile and laugh with things that they get up to. The reader gets a great insight into the world of two dogs and we can sense their taste of freedom and the naughty things they get up to. I don’t think this book is just for children as I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it will teach children about the consequences of what they do but in a fun way. I loved these two very much.

The Chanteuse from Cape Town By John Constable

The Chanteuse from Cape Town By John Constable

This gripping tale of intrigue and betrayal takes readers on a breakneck journey as Private Investigator Sol Nemo takes on South Africa’s underworld.

When rich but troubled PI, Sol Nemo, learns of the kidnap of his friend’s wife, he instinctively responds to the call for help. Little does he realise that he is soon to become embroiled in a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal. At a botched exchange, Sol is shot and the kidnappers escape, leading to a dramatic game of cat and mouse in which a world of corruption and casual violence is gradually exposed to the light of day.

This intriguing tale of murder and revenge is set against the backdrop of South Africa’s breathtaking landscapes and the vibrant cities of Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. As the story unfolds, Sol is forced to wrestle with bouts of crippling anxiety, a cast of duplicitous characters, and an uncertain love life, while his mixed race heritage often leaves him straddling two different cultures and finding himself at home in neither.

My Thoughts:

I love reading books that are set somewhere completely different especially places like South Africa where I would love to visit one day. This is a crime fiction read that is set in South Africa with a very intriguing main character called Sol Nemo. I like how fast paced and involved I felt in this read, I liked how the story unfolded with a few turns. I liked getting to know Sol Nemo and I hope to see more of him in the future. I loved reading about the descriptions of such a beautiful place too.

The Wife Next Door By Amanda Brooke

The Wife Next Door By Amanda Brooke

How well do you know the people closest to you?

It’s not just secrets buried in the garden next door…

Jane doesn’t know her new neighbours very well.

She thought they were nice. She thought they were happy.

She was wrong.

First there’s the explosive rows. Then she catches one of them digging a grave-shaped trench in the garden.

When the truth emerges, someone would kill to cover their tracks…

My Thoughts:

I knew this was going to be a good thriller but I didn’t realise just how good it was going to be. Amanda is a new author to me, so I couldn’t wait to start reading it. I liked the sound of the plot and the book moved at a great pace for me. I didn’t want to put it down and I felt as though I was so caught up in the story and I couldn’t wait to see what the outcome would be. I felt as though I was on a thrilling ride throughout the story and then there is an almighty twist that you would of never seen coming. Wow is all I have to say about that. Amanda is definitely going to be on my radar from now on.

A Stolen Memory ( An Antonia Conti Thriller Book 2) By David Beckler

A Stolen Memory ( An Antonia Conti Thriller Book 2) By David Beckler

London, the near future. GRM, a shadowy company running private prisons, has introduced a programme to alter prisoners’ memories, removing those that led to their criminal behaviour. When journalist Antonia Conti hears rumours that the technology has deadly side effects, she decides to investigate.

Antonia has looked into GRM’s corrupt dealings with the government before, and when a stolen lorry ploughs into a whistle-blower’s car, leaving him dead and her trapped in the burning vehicle, she’s convinced GRM are responsible. Enlisting her old friend DI Russell Chapman to check out the supposed ‘accident’, she discovers that he’s already investigating three other deaths that appear suspiciously linked to her own investigations.

The deeper Antonia probes, the more her friends and colleagues are at risk. Whatever sinister experiments GRM are conducting, they are determined to keep them secret. By any means necessary. Can Antonia and Chapman thwart them before anyone else loses their life? Or their mind?

My Thoughts:

This is book two in the Antonia Conti thriller series, I kind of wished I had read the first book first as I would of got to know a little more about the characters but I chose to read book two first, it can be read as a standalone. I am looking forward to reading book one next so I can get the back story. I found Antonia relatable and realistic and the author David has written her well. I liked the short chapters it makes you want to read on and also I liked how fast paced the story is, it kept me on my toes wondering what Antonia was going to do next. I liked the mixture of characters and the story was really good. I look forward to reading more of the Antonia Conti thriller series. If you after a great series read these books.

When I First Held You By Anstey Harris

When I First Held You By Anstey Harris

Silence tore them apart. Can the truth bring them back together?

In 1960s Glasgow, anti-nuclear activists Judith and Jimmy fall in love. But their future hopes are dashed when their protestors’ squat is raided and many, including Jimmy, are sent to prison. Pregnant and with no word from Jimmy, Judith is forced to enter an unmarried mothers’ home, give up their baby and learn to live with her grief.

More than half a century later, Judith’s Mending Shop restores broken treasures, just as Judith herself has been bound back together by her late, much-missed partner, Catherine. But her tranquillity is shattered when Jimmy―so different and yet somehow the same―reappears, yearning to unpick the painful past.

Realising they each know only half of the other’s story, Jimmy and Judith finally break the silence that tore apart what might have been their family. Amid heartbreak and hope, how much can now be mended?

My Thoughts:

This was such a beautiful story about love and loss told in such a sympathetic and thoughtful way. It made me go through all the emotions and had some of the most unexpected twists I could ever have imagined. This is story telling at it’s best. I feel as though with this book I want to keep on revisiting it and to remember it in years to come. Many things happen in this book but it taught me how even with love and loss that we can be broken and mended in time. One story that will never leave me.

The Drift By C. J. Tudor

The Drift By C. J. Tudor

Survival can be murder . . .

Hannah awakens to carnage, all mangled metal and shattered glass. Evacuated from a secluded boarding school during a snowstorm, her coach careered off the road, trapping her with a handful of survivors.

Meg awakens to a gentle rocking. She’s in a cable car stranded high above snowy mountains, with five strangers and no memory of how they got on board.

Carter is gazing out of the window of an isolated ski chalet that he and his companions call home. As their generator begins to waver in the storm, the threat of something lurking in the chalet’s depths looms larger.

Outside, the storm rages. Inside each group, a killer lurks.

But who?

And will anyone make it out alive? . . .

My Thoughts:

This is the second book I have read of this C.J’s and I have to say this one was really good. It was full of action and had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. It was tense and creepy even the cover is creepy. The chapters are all different people which I like as you get the perspective on the situation from not just one person. As you read on, you literally have no idea what is going to happen in the next chapter and my heart stopped a few times wondering what would happen. I think the story has been very cleverly written and I can’t wait for her next book.

One minute Lou is happily employed, with a perfect flat. The next, her home and job have gone. Suddenly she has to start over.

The last thing Lou wants is to move to a tiny Cotswolds village. She certainly doesn’t intend to work for curmudgeonly eighty-year-old Edgar Allsopp. But Edgar is about to make her the kind of promise nobody could ignore. In return, she secretly vows to help him fall in love with life again.

Foxwell is also home to Remy, whose charm and charisma are proving hard to ignore. But Lou hasn’t recovered from the last time she fell for a charmer. She needs a distraction – and luckily one’s about to turn up.

Secrets never stay hidden for long in Foxwell, nor are promises always kept. And no one could guess what lies ahead…

My Thoughts:

Jill is definitely one of my go to authors, I can always guarantee a great read with any of her books. This has to be my favourite book of this year. I fell in love with the story as soon a s a read the plot. Lou is the main character in the story and her life is going well until it isn’t. She has to move and look for another job but her new job comes in the most unexpected way. Meet Edgar who is an eighty year old man who is not a big fan of people and is quite grumpy most of the time, he wants Lou to help him but can she help me a lot more than just his basic needs. It is a truly wonderful story that melted my heart and tugged on my heart strings. I love the way they both help each other and bring the best out in each other. There were tears in my eyes. I would definitely recommend this heart warming read.

Becoming Ted By Matt Cain

Becoming Ted By Matt Cain

Ted Ainsworth has always worked at his family’s ice-cream business in the quiet Lancashire town of St Luke’s-on-Sea.

But the truth is, he’s never wanted to work for the family firm – he doesn’t even like ice-cream, though he’s never told his parents that. When Ted’s husband suddenly leaves him, the bottom falls out of his world.

But what if this could be an opportunity to put what he wants first? This could be the chance to finally follow his secret dream: something Ted has never told anyone …

My Thoughts:

After reading Matt’s previous book The Secret Life of Albert Entwistle I was looking forward to reading this one. It is all about Ted who grew up working for his parent’s ice cream business and not living his life how he wanted. When his circumstances change however he is given an opportunity to change his life for the better but will he take it? I liked the story and I felt for Ted and what had happened to him, but I felt there were certain words in this book that didn’t need to be in there it was a little cringe for me. The story is all about becoming who you really want to be and not letting anyone stop you from doing that.

Just The Nicest Couple By Mary Kubica

Just The Nicest Couple By Mary Kubica

Two couples, two close friends, one missing husband…

Jake Hayes is missing. This much is certain. At first, his wife Nina thinks he is blowing off steam somewhere after their heated fight the night before. But then a day goes by. Two days. Five. And Jake is still nowhere to be found.

Nina’s friend Lily thinks she may have been the last to see Jake before he went missing. After Lily confesses everything to her husband, Christian, the two decide that nobody can find out what happened leading up to Jake’s disappearance, especially not Nina. But Nina is out there looking for Jake, and she won’t stop until the truth is discovered.

My Thoughts:

I am not sure how I feel about this read, I really thought I was going to enjoy reading it, but I felt as though there were too many characters and I felt confused at times as to who was who. Also there is a lot of things happening and it was a bit rushed. It is a dark story that explores many different angles including loyalty and explores the idea of how far would you go to protect a loved one? I wanted to read until the end to find out what the ending was going to be, but it didn’t have me hooked like I thought it might.

The Lumberjills: Stronger Together A WW2 saga of courage and friendship By Joanna Foat

The Lumberjills: Stronger Together A WW2 saga of courage and friendship By Joanna Foat

When war breaks out, three spirited women must set aside their differences to help Britain win the war. Fighting from the forests, they find new depths of courage, strength and love. But – when war threatens everything – would you risk your life to save a friend?

When feisty, bohemian Keeva signs up for war work in the forest, she’s already learnt the hard way that people can’t be trusted. For Rosie, a factory girl from London’s East End, the forest is an escape – but she can’t stop her big mouth getting her into trouble. And Beatrice, a wealthy debutante, wants to use her brain, not ruin her fine hands felling trees. Meanwhile, Lady Denman, director of the Women’s Land Army, battles with bureaucrats in Whitehall to defend the Lumberjills.

As these strong women struggle to survive in a tough men’s world, it seems they really may succeed in their dangerous war work… when a terrible disaster strikes and threatens everything they have achieved.

The Lumberjills Stronger Together is inspired by the incredible and heroic true stories of the Women’s Timber Corps, a branch of the Women’s Land Army. Author Joanna Foat researched and interviewed sixty women who served as Lumberjills in World War II. These first-hand accounts, and her own passion for adventure in wild landscapes, bring a rugged authenticity to this emotionally rousing novel of female courage, strength and determination.

My Thoughts:

This book sounded really interesting to me and I couldn’t wait to start reading it. It is all about the lumberjills which is a female lumberjack, this story is set in World War Two and we see a group of women from all different backgrounds joining up to do what they can for the War. It was incredibly interesting to learn about what they went through back then, and what is involved in being a lumberjill back in the War. I liked at the end of the book reading about how much planning and research went into this book. It was an interesting subject and one I feel I know a lot more about now.
