After She’s Gone By Camilla Grebe

After She’s Gone By Camilla Grebe

camilla grebe.jpg

A case as cold as the season. A profiler who can’t remember. A killer ready to strike again.

Psychological profiler Hanne Lagerlind-Schön and her partner, investigator Peter Lindgren are invited to the small, sleepy industrial town of Ormberg to investigate a cold case: ten years earlier a five-year-old girl’s remains were found in a cairn near the town.

But when a recurring memory problem resurfaces, Hanne struggles to keep track of the case. She begins keeping a diary, noting down everything she is likely to forget to keep up appearances so she doesn’t lose her job.

When the body of a woman is found at the cairn and one of Hanne’s shoes is found nearby covered in the victim’s blood, can Hanne’s diary hold the key to what happened? How does this new murder connect to their old one?

How can you put together what happened when the pieces keep fading away?

My Thoughts:

After enjoying Camilla’s previous novel The ice beneath us I was intrigued to read her latest one, even though I didn’t enjoy it as much it is still a very well thought out plot and very descriptive writing almost like you are out there. It is a slightly strange story and set in Ormberg where it is cold, it did make me shudder a few times thinking I was there. You get to see what people are thinking and what people want to say but would not normally.

The Newcomer By Fern Britton

The Newcomer By Fern Britton

fern britton.jpg

She arrived in the village on the spring tide and hoped to be at the heart of it, knowing its secrets and weathering its storms.

It was to be a new beginning…

It’s springtime in the Cornish village of Pendruggan and as the community comes together to say a fond farewell to parish vicar, Simon, and his wife, Penny, a newcomer causes quite a stir…

Reverand Angela Whitehorn came to Cornwall to make a difference. With her husband, Robert, by her side, she sets about making changes – but it seems not everyone is happy for her to shake things up in the small parish, and soon Angela starts to receive anonymous poison pen letters.

Angela has always been one to fight back, and she has already brought a fresh wind into the village, supporting her female parishioners through good times and bad. But as the letters get increasingly more personal, Angela learns that the secrets are closer to home.

With faith and friends by your side, even the most unlikely of new beginnings is possible.

My Thoughts:

Fern is a brilliant writer and always leaves me with a warm glow after reading one of her books. We go back to Cornwall with Fern with her latest story and the setting is wonderful. I liked this story but it wasn’t my favourite story. It shows how a small community can rally round when things get tough and show you who your real friends are.

The Forgotten Village By Lorna Cook

The Forgotten Village By Lorna Cook

1943: The world is at war, and the villagers of Tyneham are being asked to make one more sacrifice: to give their homes over to the British army. But on the eve of their departure, a terrible act will cause three of them to disappear forever.

2018: Melissa had hoped a break on the coast of Dorset would rekindle her stagnant relationship, but despite the idyllic scenery, it’s pushing her and Liam to the brink. When Melissa discovers a strange photograph of a woman who once lived in the forgotten local village of Tyneham, she becomes determined to find out more about her story. But Tyneham hides a terrible secret, and Melissa’s search for the truth will change her life in ways she never imagined possible.

My Thoughts:

I loved this book, I grew up going for holidays to Dorset so this meant a great to me. I use to go to Worbarrow Bay and Tyneham as a child but haven’t been back for a long time, but after reading this book I am definitely going to go back soon. It was really interesting  to know some of the history around it. The story has been cleverly written to bring the past and present together. Makes for a really good read.

She wants your life – and she’ll do anything to get it…

Erica has always wanted to be exactly like her neighbour, Faye: beautiful, thin, and a mother. But Faye’s life isn’t as perfect as it seems – she has a terrible secret, and slowly but surely, it is threatening to destroy her and everything she holds dear.

When Faye’s daughter Tamsin goes missing after school, the police turn to Erica. But is Erica the only one who has been enviously watching Faye? Or is there another threat hiding in the shadows…?

My Thoughts:

A dark and twisty plot that has you on the edge of your seat. The story was good but I managed to guess what was going to happen early on. Written well with each chapter being a different person which I liked.

Star Crossed By Minnie Darke

Star Crossed By Minnie Darke

Destiny doesn’t happen by accident . . .

When Justine Carmichael (Sagittarius, aspiring journalist and sceptic) bumps into her teenage crush Nick Jordan (Aquarius, struggling actor and true believer) it could be by chance. Or it could be written in the stars.

Justine works at the Alexandria Park Star – and Nick, she now learns, relies on the magazine’s astrology column to guide him in life.

Looking for a way to get Nick’s attention, Justine has the idea of making a few small alterations to the horoscope for Aquarius before it goes to print.

After all, it’s only the stars. What could possibly go wrong?

My Thoughts:

Do you believe in  fate? well if you do then this is the book for you. Justine had a major crush on Nick in her teenage years, years later they bump into each by accident or was it? Nick loves the astrology column in a magazine so much so that he lets it show him what to do next in life, Justine works for that said magazine and decides sneakily to change a few things. A funny and warm read.

Someone’s going to sleep and never wake up…

My Thoughts:

You know when you read a book about a remote setting that your in for a creepy story and this one did not disappoint. I have read a plot like this before but the story was no where near as good as this one. Twists and turns at every available point keeps the reader on edge and then the ending was sublime. You can’t get much better than this. Another brilliant read from a fantastic author.

Along with Thames Valley Police’s newest recruit, the handsome DS Pryce, Josie must act fast – and when two more students disappear from Oriel and Somerville colleges, she realises the killer is sending her a deadly message in a cruel game of cat and mouse. This time, the case is personal – but who is the perpetrator?

In a desperate race against the clock, Josie hunts for the kidnapper, and soon discovers he could be a lot closer to home than she’d ever thought…

My Thoughts:

A new author to me so wasn’t sure what to expect. I found the story quite realistic and a real page turner. I do love a police drama and when the suspect could be someone you know it gets even better. I didn’t guess what was coming and who the perpetrator was and for me that is what makes a brilliant thriller. I look forward to reading more by this author.

The Age of Misadventure By Judy Leigh

The Age of Misadventure By Judy Leigh

All Georgie Turner wants is to keep her family together. But with her daughter growing up fast, her sister married to a man Georgie hates, and their aging aunt getting more and more outrageous, nothing’s simple.

So when her brother-in-law makes his biggest mistake yet, Georgie sees the chance to reunite the ladies in her life. And after a little persuasion, three generations of Turner women head off on a very unusual road trip. Georgie’s confident that some sun, sea and a bottle or two of prosecco will make this an adventure they’ll never forget.

What could possibly go wrong?

My Thoughts:

I loved this book, the cover sets the book off beautiful. There are lots of lovely characters and some not so nice. I loved Nan, the way she just wants a bit of company and her love of food is warming. She might not say the right words sometimes but that is all part of her charm, you can tell she is very loving and caring. Some of the things the women get up to is hilarious, it made me chuckle a few times. A nice uplifting story.
