Catch A Falling Star. A Hideaway Down Novel (Book 2)

Sometimes stars need help to shine. Laurel French is happy – and why wouldn’t she be? She’s young, free and single; she owns The Coffee Hideaway, lives in the prettiest village in East Sussex and is surrounded by friends… even if some of them are a little eccentric. What more could she want? Love? Not Laurel. Love is the last thing Laurel wants to think about… because it’s unrequited. Ned Stelling is in love with someone else. Jamie McDay is miserable.

Hollywood has become a gilded cage. The paparazzi are snapping at his heels, and since he dumped his co-star girlfriend in a spectacularly stupid public display, he’s been dropped from the Vampire series that made him a heart-throb, movie star. Visiting his friend, Gabriel Hardwick will cheer him up.

Hideaway Down may be a bit ‘twee’ but local stunner, Ivy Gilroy could definitely put a permanent smile on Jamie’s face. That’s if he can persuade her to dump her boyfriend, Ned.

My Thoughts:

I couldn’t wait to start reading this book as I am a big fan of Emily Harvale’s books. This one got me back into reading after having a bit of time off. From the moment I started reading this book I felt as though I was there in Hideaway Down. I feel with Emily’s characters as though I know them all personally, it is because she just has a way with her words. In Emily’s books you feel like you can relate to the characters which I like. I am so pleased I have found Emily Harvale as she is such a incredible author. Thank you Emily.

Appleby Farm By Cathy Bramley

Appleby Farm By Cathy Bramley

cathy bramley 2

Freya Moorcroft has wild red hair, mischievous green eyes, a warm smile and a heart of gold. She’s been happy working at the café round the corner from Ivy Lane allotments and her romance with her new boyfriend is going well, she thinks, but a part of her still misses the beautiful rolling hills of her Cumbrian childhood home: Appleby Farm.

Then a phone call out of the blue and a desperate plea for help change everything…

The farm is in financial trouble, and it’s taking its toll on the aunt and uncle who raised Freya. Heading home to lend a hand, Freya quickly learns that things are worse than she first thought. As she summons up all her creativity and determination to turn things around, Freya is surprised as her own dreams for the future begin to take shape.

Love makes the world go round, according to Freya. Not money. But will saving Appleby Farm and following her heart come at a price?

My Thoughts:

Cathy Bramley is a new author to me and I am not sure why I hadn’t read any of her books before as they are wonderful. The cover design looks amazing, I felt like I just wanted to leap in and start reading. I loved the whole concept of Freya helping her family out when they needed her the most and quite literally saving the day.  There are animals which is great as I am a big animal lover and there is romance. I loved this book from start to finish and now want to read all Cathy’s other books. Such a lovely story and I am glad I have found a new author I absolutely love.

Nina is NOT OK by Shappi Khorsandi

nina is not ok

Nina’s mum isn’t so sure. But she’s busy with her new husband and five year old Katie. And Nina’s almost an adult after all.

And if Nina sometimes wakes up with little memory of what happened the night before , then her friends are all too happy to fill in the blanks. Nina’s drunken exploits are the stuff of college legend.

But then one dark Sunday morning, even her friends can’t help piece together Saturday night. All Nina feels is a deep sense of shame, that something very bad has happened to her…

My Thoughts:

I was lucky enough to be chosen to read and review an advanced copy of this book by lovereading so thank you for sending me the book. I have heard of the comedian Shappi Khorsandi before and didn’t realise she wrote books. This is her second book . I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I think I must of been expecting more laughs, I mean there were a few but not many. I found some parts slightly cringey and wasn’t sure if I should continue but I did as I wanted to see what happened to Nina. This book wasn’t really for me but I am sure other people may like it.

The Oyster Catcher By Jo Thomas

The Oyster Catcher By Jo Thomas

jo thomas

Dooleybridge, County Galway: the last place Fiona Clutterbuck expects to end up, alone, on her wedding night.

But after the words ‘I do’ have barely left her mouth, that’s exactly where she is – with only her sequined shoes and a crashed camper van for company.

One thing is certain: Fi can’t go back. So when the opportunity arises to work for brooding local oyster farmer, Sean Thornton, she jumps at the chance. Now Fi must navigate suspicious locals, jealous rivals and an unpredictable boss if she’s to find a new life, and love, on the Irish coast. And nothing – not even a chronic fear of water – is going to hold her back.

Join Fi as she learns the rules of the ocean – and picks up a few pearls of Irish wisdom along the way…

My Thoughts:

This was such a lovely little story, as soon as I saw the cover which is stunning by the way I knew I wanted to get lost into the world of the characters in this book. I love reading a book where you actually learn something like in this book I was utterly fascinated about the process of breeding and collecting the oysters. I wouldn’t necessarily try one myself but I have a better understanding about them now. Jo has put alot of work into researching it and it clearly shows. I loved the story that went along side it and the characters were all brilliant apart from Nancy who I just wanted to slap. You have to have a baddie though and she definitely was one. I would recommend this book.

A London Affair By Jan Ellis

jan ellis
Turning her back on university, Kate hopes to find an exciting opportunity that will take her away from wellies and wet sheep in the English countryside to the glitz and glamour of London.

However, after a year selling chutney on a chilly market stall, the prospects for a glittering career in the capital are looking increasingly unlikely.

All that changes when Ned, the intriguing buyer from a smart London deli, brings a welcome chance to follow her dream, and Kate finally embarks on a new chapter, leaving behind rural life and ex-boyfriend, Steve, in exchange for six months in the hectic café scene.

In Chelsea, Kate finds a bunch of ready-made friends in her flat-mates and grows close to Clare, Imogen, Freddy and the glamorous Russian heiress, Valentina. Imogen’s many comical attempts to find Kate a boyfriend backfire for Kate, but result in a twist in Immy and Freddy’s relationship.

Friendships deepen and secrets are revealed when Kate accepts an invitation to spend Christmas at the coast with Ned.

Back from the holidays, the flat-mates receive news that changes everything and forces Kate to make some big decisions: stay in London, return home or follow her heart to Cornwall?

My Thoughts:

I was asked to review this book by Jan Ellis the author herself, she asked me a she knew how much I had loved her previous books. I didn’t waste too much time and managed to read it within a day and a half, it was brilliant. I felt as though I was transported into the places where Jan takes us in her stories. I liked Kate the main character and her story. It was a really interesting but light read. I loved it. I look forward to reading the next book.

My Thoughts:

I am a world book night giver today so I will be giving out this book to people who don’t normally read for pleasure or own books. If you want to know more see my previous post. I kept a copy for myself as I am a big fan of Lucy Diamond. Well I devoured it in one sitting, I  felt sad at the end that it had finished. It is a nice easy quick read one where you don’t have to think too much and one which I will remember. It is also part of the quick reads of 2016 and the best part of that is they only cost £1. I loved the story it made me think actually you know what if I wanted to I could do anything I want to do.  I have read many of Lucy’s books before and loved all of them. She is such a brilliant writer.

Somewhere Inside of Happy By Anna McPartlin

Maisie Bean is a fighter. A survivor. Seventeen years ago, she went on a first date that went so badly it was enough to put the girl off chips. The marriage that followed was hell but it gave her two children: funny, caring Jeremy and bullish but brilliant Valerie.

Just as it seems everything might finally start going right, sixteen-year-old Jeremy goes missing. The police descend and a media storm swirls, over five days of searching that hurtle towards an inevitable, terrible conclusion.

Maisie is facing another fight, and this time it’s the fight of her life. But she’s a survivor. Whatever the odds, she’ll never give in.

My Thoughts:

Wow what a book, it is such a beautiful story that I wont be forgetting it for a while. It is such an emotional roller coaster that I just didn’t want to get off. It makes you think about life and that if you love someone just to tell them and don’t worry about what other people think. Just be honest with yourself. There are some interesting characters in this book, I particularly liked Bridie.  There were parts that made me giggle but also parts that are very sad. Such a brilliant story but with such a stunning cover. I knew I would like it and now I am going to look out for Anna’s other book The last days of Rabbit Hayes.

One small act of kindness By Lucy Dillon

One small act of kindness By Lucy Dillon

lucy dillon

What can you do to make the world a better place?
Libby and her husband Jason have moved back to his hometown to turn the family B&B into a boutique hotel. They have left London behind and all the memories – good and bad – that went with it.
The injured woman Libby finds lying in the remote country road has lost her memory. She doesn’t know why she came to be there, and no one seems to be looking for her.
When Libby offers to take her in, this one small act of kindness sets in motion a chain of events that will change many people’s lives . .

My Thoughts:

One of my book friends gave me this book as she knew I would like it and I did. I have read a few of Lucy Dillon’s books before and really enjoyed them. I loved the story to this one as it is a little bit different. I find with Lucy’s books you don’t have to concentrate on them too much and it made me change the way I look at life. I thought Libby was great but I didn’t care too much for her husband Jason, she could do so much better than him. I loved Bob the hotels dog too. This book is definitely worth a read.

The Daughter’s Secret By Eva Holland

The Daughter’s Secret By Eva Holland

eva holland

My daughter is a liar. A liar, liar, liar. And I’m starting to see where she gets it from.

When Rosalind’s fifteen-year-old daughter, Stephanie, ran away with her teacher, this ordinary family became something it had never asked to be. Their lives held up to scrutiny in the centre of a major police investigation, the Simms were headline news while Stephanie was missing with a man who was risking everything.

Now, six years on, Ros takes a call that will change their lives all over again. He’s going to be released from prison. Years too early. In eleven days’ time.

As Temperley’s release creeps ever closer, Ros is forced to confront the events that led them here, back to a place she thought she’d left behind, to questions she didn’t want to answer. Why did she do it? Where does the blame lie? What happens next?

My Thoughts:

This book is all about a young girl who goes on the run with her school teacher, it is how her family cope with the situation and how when the teacher is released from prison they all deal with it. I found this book very hard to get on with, I didn’t really connect with the characters and I felt as though Stephanie’s mum was a little over the top. It does sound like an interesting story but it just wasn’t for me. I felt as though there were many unanswered questions at the end too.
