When a ghost ship is spotted on the horizon one spring evening, bookseller Eleanor Mace decides to investigate the myths and legends of Combemouth, the Devon seaside town where she runs The Reading Room.

As Eleanor digs deeper into the town s history, she becomes intrigued by a Victorian crime report that seems to have unexpected links to the present day. A celebrity book launch, an exploding dress and some salsa-dancing pensioners make this a mystery with a difference.

My Thoughts:

After reading Jan’s previous novel A Summer of Surprises I was looking forward to catching up with Eleanor and finding out what is happening with her now. I loved getting back to the bookshop it is my favourite place and this one has a beautiful setting next to the sea what more could you want? The town’s people and the mystery really had me gripped and I couldn’t put it down. Another little treasure from a fabulously talented author.

It is two years since Eleanor Mace said farewell to her lover Christophe and returned to Devon.

Her bookshop in the sleepy seaside town of Combemouth has become the hub of the community and with the new love of her life, Daniel, everything seems to be blissfully plain sailing.

That is until Freya, Daniel’s ex-wife appears on the scene.

Hired as an architect for a major celebrity who plans to build an enormous new complex in Combemouth, Freya seeks Daniel’s help to get her ambitious scheme approved.

Outraged, Eleanor mounts a protest against the scheme – helped by some endangered local wildlife – that gets her noticed by the world’s media, but puts her at risk of losing Daniel.

As the campaign gains momentum, Eleanor is asked to speak at a conference in Spain, where she unexpectedly bumps into the handsome Christophe – a blast from her past.

Surely this must be fate?

Will Eleanor fall for the charms of her French ex-boyfriend, or can she find it in her heart to forgive Daniel and return to Combemouth?

My Thoughts:

I was lucky enough to get a advance copy of this book and I absolutely loved it. This book is a sequel to ‘An Unexpected Affair’ and I loved catching up with Eleanor and the other characters from the previous book. I love the way the book is set out and there are some interesting characters thrown into the mix. I found the story entertaining and I did find myself chuckling on a few occasions. The ending is a good one as you will not be expecting it. I love the way Jan writes, and I look forward to more of her books in the future.

There she opens up a bookshop, The Reading Room, on the local highstreet – and makes a roaring success of it.

But can Eleanor make a success of her love life as well?

There is no shortage of men. But when Eleanor thinks back over her life and loves, she remembers a passionate love affair in France in her twenties. And when her sister suggests they take a trip down memory lane and holiday there, will Eleanor take her up on her offer – and if she does, will she discover what happened to her great love Christophe?

Does Eleanor’s heart belong in France?

Or is there something, or someone, she’s been missing in Devon?

My Thoughts:

This is Jan’s first novel and I really enjoyed it. I love the fact that your drawn straight away into Eleanor’s West Country Bookshop world, brimming to the rafters with some very exciting and interesting people. In this story you get drawn into Eleanor’s life which goes from past to present which I found easy to keep up with unlike in other novels where it can become confusing. There are some romantic parts in this book but also some humour. I love the way Jan writes with such passion and look forward to reading her books in the future.
