On a Beautiful Day By Lucy Diamond

On a Beautiful Day By Lucy Diamond

It’s a beautiful day in Manchester and four friends are meeting for a birthday lunch. But then they witness a shocking accident just metres away which acts as a catalyst for each of them.

For Laura, it’s a wake-up call to heed the ticking of her biological clock. Sensible Jo finds herself throwing caution to the wind in a new relationship. Eve, who has been trying to ignore the worrying lump in her breast, feels helpless and out of control. And happy-go-lucky India is drawn to one of the victims of the accident, causing long-buried secrets to rise to the surface.

This is a novel about the startling and unexpected turns life can take. It’s about luck – good and bad – and about finding bravery and resilience when your world is in turmoil. Above all, it’s about friendship, togetherness and hope.

My Thoughts:

This is a book full of emotion and it really makes you think what you are grateful for. The story is about four very brave ladies who all going through real life situations. Two of the women really struck a chord with me as I have been through something similar but not exactly the same and I really felt for Eve as you don’t really think about health scares until you or someone you know has one then it comes flooding back to you. It is an emotional read but one that you just realise how close your friends and family can be.

The Nowhere Man By Gregg Hurwitz

The Nowhere Man By Gregg Hurwitz

nowere

He was once called Orphan X.

As a boy, Evan Smoak was taken from a children’s home, raised and trained as part of a secret government initiative buried so deep that virtually no one knows it exists. But he broke with the programme, choosing instead to vanish off grid and use his formidable skill set to help those unable to protect themselves.

One day, though, Evan’s luck ran out . . .

Ambushed, drugged, and spirited away, Evan wakes up in a locked room with no idea where he is or who has captured him. As he tries to piece together what’s happened, testing his gilded prison and its highly trained guards for weaknesses, he receives a desperate call for help.

With time running out, he will need to out-think, out-manoeuvre, and out-fight an opponent the likes of whom he’s never encountered to have any chance of escape. He’s got to save himself to protect those whose lives depend on him. Or die trying . . .

My Thoughts:

After reading Orphan X  I was really looking forward to reading the next instalment, I think to learn Evan Smoak’s background you really need to read Orphan X first. The story captivates you and intrigues you. I wanted to see what would be next for Evan and this book really does not disappoint. I did feel as though the ending wasn’t as good as it could of been but I will look forward to the next book.

Such a beautiful and perfect setting with lovely warm characters that will get you really into the festive mood. Holly has such descriptive writing it almost makes you feel as though you are there. I liked the sound of Gabe he sounds such a lovely guy and his little girl Wren is such a little sweetheart. I know it is not Christmas but I still enjoyed this lovely read.

The Keeper of Lost Things By Ruth Hogan

The Keeper of Lost Things By Ruth Hogan

Meet the ‘Keeper of Lost Things’…
Once a celebrated author of short stories now in his twilight years, Anthony Peardew has spent half his life collecting lost objects, trying to atone for a promise broken many years before.

Realising he is running out of time, he leaves his house and all its lost treasures to his assistant Laura, the one person he can trust to fulfil his legacy and reunite the thousands of objects with their rightful owners.

But the final wishes of the ‘Keeper of Lost Things’ have unforeseen repercussions which trigger a most serendipitous series of encounters…

My Thoughts:

This is a story of two halves, two stories that eventually join together to make an unusual story but one that works. The return of seemingly useless objects who didn’t even know they had lost them, each object provides an intriguing and sometimes heart wrenching story about it’s owner.  I loved all the characters I especially found myself drawn to Laura and also Sunshine she really made me smile. I would highly recommend this book.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine By Gail Honeyman

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine By Gail Honeyman

eleanor

Eleanor Oliphant has learned how to survive – but not how to live

Eleanor Oliphant leads a simple life. She wears the same clothes to work every day, eats the same meal deal for lunch every day and buys the same two bottles of vodka to drink every weekend.

Eleanor Oliphant is happy. Nothing is missing from her carefully timetabled life. Except, sometimes, everything.

One simple act of kindness is about to shatter the walls Eleanor has built around herself. Now she must learn how to navigate the world that everyone else seems to take for granted – while searching for the courage to face the dark corners she’s avoided all her life.

Change can be good. Change can be bad. But surely any change is better than… fine?

My Thoughts:

This is a book everybody should read, this is a book to remind you that everyone has their own story. There are times in the book where you laugh out loud but there are also sad times and times to reflect on your own life. I think this book sends out a powerful message to its readers and I reckon it is going to be hard to top such a powerful read.

A Country Christmas By Veronica Henry

A Country Christmas By Veronica Henry

veronica henry

Homemade mulled wine, freshly baked mince pies and plenty of Christmas cheer…

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, they say. And in the little Cotswolds village of Honeycote, the festive season looks set to bring people more than a few surprises under the tree.

As Lucy Liddiard plans the festive lunch for her nearest and dearest, she has little idea of the dramas about to play out before the crackers are pulled and the corks popped. She knows the family brewery, Honeycote Ales, has seen better days. She knows her husband, Mickey, is an incorrigible flirt. But does she realise how close both are edging towards disaster?

As the nights draw in, garlands deck the halls and the carols ring out, there are secrets and lies, love and lust all waiting to be unwrapped.

Welcome to Honeycote, and a Christmas no one will ever forget…

My Thoughts:

This book was originally published as Honeycote and this is the first book in the three part series. I did find the start of the book overwhelming as there are a lot of characters from the start but once you get to know who everybody is it was fine. It is full of laughter, friends and family time. There is lots going on but it was a really good read.

Coming Home By Fern Britton

Coming Home By Fern Britton

fern

This title will be released on June 28, 2018.

When the only place you want to be is home…

When Ella’s beloved grandmother dies, she comes back to the beautiful Cornish coast to heal her heart. There she finds her home again and discovers a new life, and new love … But she also opens a treasure trove of secrets.

Sennen left Cornwall a young single mum but unable to cope. She left her children, her family and part of her. She’s spent the years hiding from her past, hiding from herself.

Now it’s time to come back. To Cornwall. To face her mistakes. To pray for forgiveness. To hope for a future with her daughter.

My Thoughts:

I always get excited when I see that Fern Britton has a new book out and I could not wait for this one. Fern’s books are pure escapism and wonderful to read on a cold and frosty morning. I managed to read this book in a day and a half, I just couldn’t put it down. I found the story intriguing and had to know if Sennen would ever come back to her children. The last few chapters bought tears to my eyes I wont say if they were happy ones or not but this is one book you wont want to miss out on reading.

The Key By Kathryn Hughes

The Key By Kathryn Hughes

1956
It’s Ellen Crosby’s first day as a student nurse at Ambergate County Lunatic Asylum. When she meets a young woman committed by her father, and a pioneering physician keen to try out the various ‘cures’ for mental illness, little does Ellen know that a choice she will make is to change all their lives for ever…

2006
Sarah is drawn to the abandoned Ambergate Asylum. Whilst exploring the old corridors she discovers a suitcase belonging to a female patient who was admitted fifty years earlier. The shocking contents lead Sarah to unravel a forgotten story of tragedy, lost love and an old wrong that only she may have the power to put right . .

My Thoughts:

I found myself utterly mesmerised by this story. I have always been intrigued by Asylums as as a kid I grew up living near one that had been derelict for a good number of years. The story jumps from past to  present and a really interesting story it is. I felt as though I learnt a great deal too and could really picture it in my mind as the writing was really descriptive. A story I wont forget but would recommend greatly.

Beneath the Skin By Caroline England

Beneath the Skin By Caroline England

caroline

Three women. Three secrets.

Antonia is beautiful and happily married. Her life is perfect. So why does she hurt herself when nobody’s watching?

Sophie is witty, smart and married to the best-looking man in town. She likes a drink, but who doesn’t?

Olivia is pretending to be a happy wife and mother. But her secret could tear her family apart.

Their lies start small, they always do. But if they don’t watch out, the consequences will be deadly.

My Thoughts:

I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. I found there were too many characters to make it an enjoyable read. I kept on trying to remember who is who and their story. It is a dark read and there are people that will enjoy it but it just didn’t work for me.

The Good Samaritan By John Marrs

The Good Samaritan By John Marrs

john marrs

She’s a friendly voice on the phone. But can you trust her?

The people who call End of the Line need hope. They need reassurance that life is worth living. But some are unlucky enough to get through to Laura. Laura doesn’t want them to hope. She wants them to die.

Laura hasn’t had it easy: she’s survived sickness and a difficult marriage only to find herself heading for forty, unsettled and angry. She doesn’t love talking to people worse off than she is. She craves it.

But now someone’s on to her—Ryan, whose world falls apart when his pregnant wife ends her life, hand in hand with a stranger. Who was this man, and why did they choose to die together?

The sinister truth is within Ryan’s grasp, but he has no idea of the desperate lengths Laura will go to…

Because the best thing about being a Good Samaritan is that you can get away with murder.

My Thoughts:

What an intense thriller, it made my palms sweat thinking about what could be. The story is bought to life with two different sides of the story one being Laura’s story and the other being Ryan’s story. It left me on tenterhooks and made me want to keep reading but I didn’t want the story to end. A very captivating read.
