Family For Beginners By Sarah Morgan

Family For Beginners By Sarah Morgan

who says you can’t choose your family?

When Flora falls in love with Jack, suddenly she’s not only handling a very cranky teenager, but she’s also living in the shadow of Jack’s perfect, immortalised wife, Becca. Every summer, Becca and Jack would holiday with Becca’s oldest friends and Jack wants to continue the tradition, so now Flora must face a summer trying to live up to Becca’s memory, with not only Jack’s daughter looking on, but with Becca’s best friends judging her every move…

The more Flora tries to impress everyone, the more things go horribly wrong…but as the summer unfolds, Flora begins pushing her own boundaries, and finding herself in a way that she never thought she needed to.

And she soon learns that families come in all shapes and sizes

My Thoughts:

Sarah Morgan is definitely one of my favourite feel good authors, she has a way with words that just makes you melt into the story and hide away from the world. There are sensitive issues in this read but one Sarah tackles and deals with very sensitively. The issues are relatable and even though I am not in Floras shoes i can imagine how she must feel going into a relationship with a guy who has kids. I really felt for Flora but I also felt for Jack's kids. But it shows if families stick together and open up now they feel they can deal with it together. Another superb read from Sarah.

The Dilemma By B A Paris

It’s Livia’s 40th birthday and she’s having the party of a lifetime to make up for the wedding she never had. Everyone she loves will be there except her daughter Marnie, who’s studying abroad. But although Livia loves Marnie, she’s secretly glad she won’t be at the party. She needs to tell Adam something about their daughter but she’s waiting until the party is over so they can have this last happy time together.

Adam wants everything to be perfect for Livia so he’s secretly arranged for Marnie to come home and surprise her on her birthday. During the day, he hears some terrible news. He needs to tell Livia, because how can the party go on? But she’s so happy, so excited – and the guests are about to arrive.

The Dilemma – how far would you go to give someone you love a last few hours of happiness?

My Thoughts:

Another really good read from this author, it had everything I needed for me to be gripped from the first chapter. The chapters alternate between husband and wife Livia and Adam. When tradegy strikes Adam has to make a decision wether or not to tell his wife, in one hand i kind of see why he made that decision but in the other hand I wish he would of told her sooner, I would of wanted to know sooner if I was in that situation. An awful situation to be in and I did feel for Adam, what a devastating effect it has on the family. In times like this remember family’s should stick together. What would you have done with this dilemma?

The Silent House By Nell Pattison

The Silent House By Nell Pattison

silent house

If someone was in your house, you’d know … Wouldn’t you?

But the Hunter family are deaf, and don’t hear a thing when a shocking crime takes place in the middle of the night. Instead, they wake up to their worst nightmare: the murder of their daughter.

The police call Paige Northwood to the scene to interpret for the witnesses. They’re in shock, but Paige senses the Hunters are hiding something.

One by one, people from Paige’s community start to fall under suspicion. But who would kill a little girl?

Was it an intruder?

Or was the murderer closer to home?

My Thoughts:

What a cleverly written story and so intense that when I wasn’t reading this book I was thinking about it. It gave me the chills wondering who the murderer was as I literally had no idea. There are all these suspects which you keep thinking yes it is them and then the author throws a curve ball and you suspect someone else. Paige Northwood is the interpreter for the family and even she gets mixed up in some of it. It will keep you guessing till the end and when you realise it will all make sense. This is an author to keep an eye out for as I am sure more good things are to come.

How to Build a Boyfriend By Sarah Archer

Meet Kelly. A brilliant but socially awkward robotics engineer desperately seeking a wedding date…

Meet Ethan. Intelligent, gorgeous, brings out the confidence Kelly didn’t know she had and … not technically human. (But no one needs to know that.)

With her sister’s wedding looming and everyone in the world on her case about being perpetually single, Kelly decides to take her love life into her own hands – and use her genius skills to create Ethan.

But when she can’t resist keeping her new boy toy around even after the ‘I do’s’, Kelly knows she needs to hit the off switch on this romance, fast. Only, when you’ve found (well, made) your perfect man, how do you kiss him goodbye?

My Thoughts:

I loved the concept of this book, a little bit different when there are robots involved. There is a playful side to the book with some of the sentences that I picked up on through out of the book which I liked. I didn’t know much about robots until reading this book, here you gain a little more insight into them which was interesting. I liked the fact with this book you had no idea where it was leading too. But I liked it.

A murdered beauty queen. A town full of secrets. Who killed Jenny?

Jenny Kennedy appears to have it all. She’s the perfect daughter, the popular girl at school and a successful beauty queen. But then Jenny is found dead in a murder that rocks the small town she grew up in to the core.

Her estranged half-sister Virginia finds herself thrust into the spotlight as the case dominates the news and is desperate to uncover who killed Jenny. But she soon realises that maybe Jenny’s life wasn’t so perfect after all.

The truth is that Jenny has more than a few secrets of her own, and so do her neighbours… What really happened that night?

My Thoughts:

This was an interesting read full of suspects and twists and turns, I felt as though it got into my head and I couldn’t stop thinking about who the killer was. The story is very cleverly written and the characters really make the story come to life. What really happened to Jenny is the question and boy oh boy you will be shocked by the ending.

Her Husband’s Mistake By Sheila O’Flanagan

Her Husband’s Mistake By Sheila O’Flanagan

shmistakes

Roxy’s marriage has always been rock solid.

After twenty years, and with two carefree kids, she and Dave are still the perfect couple.

Until the day she comes home unexpectedly, and finds Dave in bed with their attractive, single neighbour.

Suddenly Roxy isn’t sure about anything – her past, the business she’s taken over from her dad, or what her family’s future might be. She’s spent so long caring about everyone else that she’s forgotten what she actually wants. But something has changed. And Roxy has a decision to make.

Whether it’s with Dave, or without him, it’s time for Roxy to start living for herself…

My Thoughts:

After reading the blurb on the back of this book, I liked the sound of it and was intrigued to see what the outcome of Roxy’s life would be. I didn’t overly warm to her, I felt sad for her when she catches her husband in bed with the neighbour but then after that some of the choices she makes or nearly makes I didn’t like. I like the fact that she is a hardworking mum who has taken over her dad’s business as a driver, some of the people she drives particularly a handsome man makes her question whether she still wants to be with her husband or not.

When Life Gives You Lemons By Fiona Gibson

When Life Gives You Lemons By Fiona Gibson

lemons

Sometimes life can be bittersweet . . .

Between tending to the whims of her seven-year-old and the demands of her boss, Viv barely gets a moment to herself. It’s not quite the life she wanted, but she hasn’t run screaming for the hills yet.

But then Viv’s husband Andy makes his mid-life crisis her problem. He’s having an affair with his (infuriatingly age-appropriate) colleague, a woman who – unlike Viv – doesn’t put on weight when she so much as glances at a cream cake.

Viv suddenly finds herself single, with zero desire to mingle. Should she be mourning the end of life as she knows it, or could this be the perfect chance to put herself first?

When life gives you lemons, lemonade just won’t cut it. Bring on the gin!

My Thoughts:

Another amusing read from Fiona Gibson, this time the story is about Viv, who is a character that I am sure many women can relate to, not enough hours in the day plus a boss that is very demanding and a husband who is having an affair, it makes for some very funny moments but also brings back that you have to make time for yourself no matter what. I loved the ending made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

A Village Affair By Julie Houston

A Village Affair By Julie Houston

julie

Cassie Beresford has recently landed her dream job as deputy head at her local, idyllic village primary school, Little Acorns. So, the last thing she needs is her husband of twenty years being ‘outed’ at a village charity auction – he has been having an affair with one of her closest friends.

As if that weren’t enough to cope with, Cassie suddenly finds herself catapulted into the head teacher position, and at the forefront of a fight to ward off developers determined to concrete over the beautiful landscape.

But through it all, the irresistible joy of her pupils, the reality of keeping her teenage children on the straight and narrow, her irrepressible family and friends, and the possibility of new love, mean what could have been the worst year ever, actually might be the best yet…

My Thoughts:

I haven’t read any of Julie Houston’s books before so was looking forward to delving into a new author. I knew I would like it as it is a warm hearted read with comedy through out too. I found the main character Cassie as courageous, I felt as though she was going through relatable subjects and the author dealt with it really well. The story is about finding inner strength when you don’t feel as though you have it and want to give it up but persevering and getting what you want.

Away with the Penguins By Hazel Prior

Away with the Penguins By Hazel Prior

penguins

Veronica McCreedy is about to have the journey of a lifetime . . .

Veronica McCreedy lives in a mansion by the sea. She loves a nice cup of Darjeeling tea whilst watching a good wildlife documentary. And she’s never seen without her ruby-red lipstick.

Although these days Veronica is rarely seen by anyone because, at 85, her days are spent mostly at home, alone.

She can be found either collecting litter from the beach (‘people who litter the countryside should be shot’), trying to locate her glasses (‘someone must have moved them’) or shouting
instructions to her assistant, Eileen (‘Eileen, door!’).

Veronica doesn’t have family or friends nearby. Not that she knows about, anyway . . . And she has no idea where she’s going to leave her considerable wealth when she dies.

But today . . . today Veronica is going to make a decision that will change all of this.

My Thoughts:

I loved this book, I did warm to Veronica especially with all she had to go through, we get snippets of Veronica’s life as she was growing up and it reveals that she may have a distant relative, so she goes on the hunt. I love how the penguins come into this story and how Veronica goes to try to help them and little Pip sounded so cute. I  felt as though I learnt something about the penguins with Terry’s blog. It taught me that these are just some of the animals that need to be protected and to help them out to use less plastic.
