The Ops Room Girls By Vicki Beeby

The Ops Room Girls By Vicki Beeby

When Evie’s dreams come crashing down, she’s determined to still make something of herself in these trying times…

It is 1939 and working class Evie Bishop has received a scholarship to study mathematics at Oxford when tragedy turns her life upside down. Evie must seek a new future for herself and, inspired to contribute to the war effort, joins the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force as an Ops Room plotter.

Posted to a fighter station on the Sussex Coast, Evie befriends two other WAAFs shy, awkward May and flirty, glamorous Jess. Faced with earning the approval of strict officers and finding their way in a male dominated world, the three girls band together to overcome challenges, navigate new romances and keep their pilots safe in the skies.

But the German bombers seem to know more than they should about the base’s operations, and soon Evie, May and Jess are caught up in a world more dangerous than they ever imagined…

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this book. I like reading about what happened back in the day. This book is set in 1939 and is set around the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, which I found really interesting. Evie, May and Jess form a really lovely friendship when they all start work at a fighter station, they are all different women and we hear about their lives. I like reading about the war and I always seem to learn new information. Vicki writes well and has packed lots into this book. I look forward to reading Christmas with the Ops room Girls and catching up with the women to see what happens next.

Light and Shade serious (and not so serious) poems By Kevin Morris

Light and Shade serious (and not so serious) poems By Kevin Morris

Life is full of light and shade. For to be human is to experience joy, beauty, love, pain and laughter. This collection reflects all facets of human experience. hence the title ‘Light and Shade; serious (and not so serious poems)’.

My Thoughts:

I am really getting into poem books now, I like the fact that this one is divided into sections, one section has thought provoking and serious poems and the other has amusing poems. I enjoyed the majority of the poems Vanity was probably my favourite. I like poems that make you think but I also like poems that are funny and make me smile, Kevin has got a good balance of both here. A really good poem book.

When I Know Your Name By Gemma M. Lawrence

When I Know Your Name By Gemma M. Lawrence

Elena Dumont is being watched. No one believes her, but she knows. She feels it. A kidnap, a betrayal and a choice soon alter her life forever. Will she make that choice?

Will she give up everything she knows to be with a man who should be her enemy? And will she find the person who wants her dead before they strike again?

My Thoughts:

This book is dangerous, once you have picked it up, nothing else will stand in it’s way and you wont want to put it down. It is a very good read with believable characters, I don’t think I have read a book with this type of story before, the fact that this is a debut novel just makes me even more happy as it is full of suspense and you never know what will happen next. I look forward to more books by Gemma in the future. This is definitely one I would recommend.

Dragonflies at Night: More Than A Love Story By Anne Marie Bennett

Dragonflies at Night: More Than A Love Story By Anne Marie Bennett

A dragonfly brings a mother’s love to a grieving daughter.

Meet Savannah, the thirty-something owner of Life Celebrations, a party planning business. Despite losing both parents as a teenager, Savannah is creating a positive life for herself, surrounded by friends and co-workers who are now her family. But she also has a secret—as much as she wants to settle down and have children, she is afraid to, for fear of getting cancer and having to leave them without their mother, as she herself was left behind years ago.

Meet Deirdre Rose, Savannah’s mother. She continues to watch over Savannah, who feels deeply connected to her mother whenever she sees a dragonfly.

Now meet Ben, a thirty-something recording artist who is good-looking, talented, and a household name. Despite his fame, Ben is lonely. He trusts few people because it seems everyone wants something from him instead of getting to know who he really is.

Savannah and Ben cross paths when they meet at a yoga retreat in the Massachusetts Berkshires. They are drawn to each other’s creativity and outlook on life. She sees beyond his celebrity and he admires her strength in what she’s had to overcome.

What happens when the retreat ends and they go their separate ways? Will they be able to make a long distance relationship work? Can Savannah put aside her fears, and will Ben allow himself to be truly vulnerable?

Above all . . . what message do Deirdre Rose and Dragonfly have for both of them?

My Thoughts:

I like how this story has three main characters, Savannah, Deirdre Rose and Ben. Savannah is a young woman who has her own business, she has been through it and as a teenager has lost her parents, she has a secret and is afraid to tell anyone. Deirdre Rose is Savannah’s mum, she has a thing for dragonflies as they make her feel connected with her mum, and Ben is a guy who is handsome and successful but deep down he is lonely. When Savannah and Ben meet at a retreat, they are drawn to each other, will they tell each other their secrets or will they be wrapped up forever. I love the way the dragonflies play a major part in the story and from now on I will really appreciate them. I enjoyed this book.

A Terrible Secret By Cathy Glass

A Terrible Secret By Cathy Glass

Tilly hates her stepfather, Dave. He abuses her mother, but she refuses to leave him.

Frightened for her own safety, Tilly asks to go into foster care and is placed with Cathy. Tilly arrives with a graze on her cheek and Cathy becomes increasingly concerned by Dave’s behaviour, especially when she learns he has been showering Tilly with gifts.

While she’s busy looking after Tilly and trying to keep her safe, Cathy is also worried about her own daughter, Lucy. She has a very difficult decision to make that will affect the rest of her life, and Cathy hopes she makes the right choice.

My Thoughts:

As soon as I get a book by Cathy Glass, I just have to read it straight away, this is the story of Tilly. Cathy Glass is a foster carer and has been for a very long time. I feel as though she is not only an author but a wonderful and very caring lady, with two kids of her own and her adopted daughter, she still manages to find the time to care for other kids, which is an incredible thing to do. I like the way that any child that comes into Cathy’s home is treated like family, she has so much love to give. With Cathy’s books I always say to myself just one more chapter then I end up reading lots more chapters. Her books are addictive, I also wanted to see where we left of with Lucy who is Cathy’s adopted daughter, there is always a lot going on but Cathy manages to do it all single handedly. I feel as though reading these books gives me more of an education into the foster care world which I previously did not know anything about. I look forward to the next book where Tilly’s story continues.

Emily Knight I am… Becoming By A. Bello

Emily Knight I am… Becoming By A. Bello

Homecoming. Sacrifice. Family. Fire. The Knights are finally reunited and ready to defeat Neci once and for all. But Neci is one step ahead and is targeting them one by one. When one of Emily’s best friends is kidnapped,

Emily leads the elite team on a rescue mission but nothing can prepare them for what Neci has planned.

My Thoughts:

This is a little bit different to my usual reads but I thought I would give it a try. This is book three in the I am series. I would say it is more aged around the younger person and is a fantasy, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. There is a good range of characters including baddie Neci who suited that role very well. Emily is a strong character who does her best to get her best friend back when kidnapped. I felt as though she is one tough cookie. I look forward to reading the first two books.

Follow Langdon and his band of friends as they attempt to untangle the web of intrigue and return Brunswick to “the way life should be.”

My Thoughts:

I read this book in a day and bloody loved it. It had everything I wanted plus more. I was drawn to the main character who is called Goff Langdon he is a private detective but also has his own bookstore, which is named after his dog Coffee Dog. There is a interesting mix of characters some baddies like Shakespeare and greedy millionaires that Langdon has to deal with but also some nice characters like Chabal who runs the bookstore for Langdon. I liked the beginning, middle and end. How the story wraps up too is very good. This was a great first book and I look forward to book 2. 10/10

The Heatwave By Kate Riordan

The Heatwave By Kate Riordan

Elodie was beautiful. Elodie was smart. Elodie was troubled. Elodie is dead.

Sylvie hasn’t been back to her crumbling French family home in years. Not since the death of her eldest daughter Elodie.

Every corner of the old house feels haunted by memories of her – memories she has tried to forget.

But as temperatures rise, and forest fires rage through the French countryside, a long-buried family secret is about to come to light.

Because there’s something Sylvie’s been hiding about what really happened to Elodie that summer.

And it could change everything.

My Thoughts:

I was looking forward to delving into this story, the blurb promised to be a really good psychological thriller, however it seemed to be quite slow going for the first half of the book, it is set in France in the middle of a heatwave, I read this when we had out heatwave here in England so could almost imagine I was there. There is a uncovered mystery and secrets are hidden but will they be revealed? It is quite a dark and tense read.
