Frogkisser By Garth Nix

Frogkisser By Garth Nix

frog kisser

Garth Nix is on hilarious form as he spins his very own fairy tale, featuring Princess Anya, who, with her loyal dog, must embark on a terribly important (capital Q) Quest to acquire the ingredients for a reversal lip balm, the vital item needed to change a frog back to a prince . . . oh, and save her kingdom from her villainous step(step)father.

My Thoughts:

I was interested in reading a modern fairytale based on the story of the frog prince, but for me I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I might. I just didn’t find it that funny, I mean I can see why young readers may enjoy it but it just wasn’t for me. It is a shame. I did like the cover and all the frogs inside the cover, I thought it looked enchanting.

My Grandmother sends her regards and apologies By Fredrik Backman

My Grandmother sends her regards and apologies By Fredrik Backman

This title is not released until the 4th June 2015

Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is seventy-seven years old and crazy. Standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-men-who-want-to-talk-about-Jesus-crazy. She is also Elsa’s best, and only, friend. At night Elsa runs to her grandmother’s stories, to the Land of Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas. There, everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.

So when Elsa’s grandmother dies and leaves behind a series of letters apologizing to people she has hurt, it marks the beginning of Elsa’s greatest adventure. Her grandmother’s letters lead her to an apartment building full of drunks, monsters, attack dogs, and totally ordinary old crones-but also to the truth about fairytales and kingdoms and a grandmother like no other.

My Thoughts:

I loved the start of this book, the relationship between Elsa and her grandmother is beautiful. I did find it quite hard going and wasn’t entirely sure what was going on some of the time. The story does have a certain kind of magic to it but I am not really sure why. Some people have said this book was brilliant so I think it is a bit like Marmite.
