Carrying Albert Home By Homer Hickman

Carrying Albert Home By Homer Hickman

homer hickman

A journey of a thousand miles. With an alligator on the back seat. And John Steinbeck as a passenger.

This is a tale where everything is true, except the bits that are made up.

In 1930s America, the Great Depression made everyone’s horizons smaller, and Elsie Lavender found herself back where she began, in the coalfields of West Virginia.
She had just one memento of her halcyon days – a baby alligator named Albert.

Then one day, her husband’s stoical patience snapped and Elsie had to choose between Homer and Albert.
She decided that there was only one thing to do: they would carry Albert home to Florida.

And so began their odyssey – a journey like no other, where Elsie, Homer and Albert encountered everything from movie stars and revolutionaries to Ernest Hemingway and hurricanes in their struggle to find love, redemption,
and a place to call home.

My Thoughts:

This is a story about one man, his wife and her alligator. It is a road trip with a twist that is really quite something. I found myself quite attached to the characters and found myself admiring them in each of their own ways. Elsie knows what she wants and is not afraid to get stuck in. Homer is a gentle man, he loves Elsie but is not sure whether she loves him back or not. Also there is Albert the alligator and also the rooster so keep an eye out for him. An intriguing tale based on a real life story.

jane fallon

Tamsin and her best friend Michelle have been inseparable since they were teenagers. Even now they spend all their time together, along with Patrick, Michelle’s handsome husband.

So when Tamsin hears a rumour that Patrick is having an affair, she is furious. Unwilling to ignore it, Tamsin plots a scheme to catch Patrick in the act, using her assistant Bea as live-bait. It should be fool proof.
After all, Tamsin can trust Bea with anything. From her daily coffee order to fetching her dry-cleaning, writing reports and doing all the filing – Bea does everything with a smile on her face.

Except Tamsin never considered Bea might have her own agenda.

And if she does, then Tamsin really needs to watch her back . . .

My Thoughts:

I had never read any of Jane Fallon’s books before this one and to be honest never heard of her before. I choose this book as I had heard good things about it. It was alright but not really my cup of tea. I liked how the chapters were each person as you get a real perspective on how each person is dealing with the situation. But I didn’t really enjoy it as I think sometimes when you read a book and it seems a bit close to home it puts you off. I wasn’t keen On Tamsin either, I mean who lies to their best friend, I just didn’t get it. I did persist until the end but it wasn’t for me.

One Hot Summer By Kat French

One Hot Summer By Kat French

kat french

This title will be released on June 2, 2016.

Being married to a celebrity isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, especially when that celebrity has a very public affair with his co-star…

Alice McBride is determined that the one thing she won’t lose in her marriage breakup is Borne Manor, her beloved home, but she gets more than she bargained for when she rents it out for the summer and a sexy cowboy comes to stay.

Country music star Robinson Duff has had his own share of heartbreak and needs somewhere quiet to hide out for the summer. Neither Alice nor Robinson are in any position for romance; the timing is terrible and they’re both rebounding like out of control frisbees.

Can a holiday romance help mend their broken hearts. Or will it just make things even worse when the long hot summer comes to its inevitable end?

My Thoughts:

I want to say a big thank you to the team at Avon for sending me an advanced copy of this book, as well as that they sent me a lovely note to wish me a speedy recovery from a recent operation I have had. It was a lovely thought so thank you. I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice easy read with a very hot cowboy. I loved how the scene was set in a big country house called Borne Manor, I would love to live somewhere like that. There is lots of naughtiness in this book but it is done well. The ending did not disappoint either. A few chuckle moments in a very enjoyable read.

A DEATH THAT CAN’T BE EXPLAINED.

My Thoughts:

I had been waiting for this book to come out in paperback for ages and as my luck would have it managed to receive an advanced copy of it. This is definitely a must read this year, it has everything you could possibly want from a thriller. It is very fast paced and I felt as though I was on a terrifying roller-coaster that I didn’t want to get off. I found Solomon Creed very intriguing and there were quite a few twists and turns I wasn’t expecting. I will be looking out for more of Simon’s books. If they are anything like this one I just know they will be excellent.

Isobel Graves moved to LA determined to be the Next Big Thing. Instead, she is dressed as a giant prawn handing out fliers promoting a fish market.

Where did it all go wrong? When Isobel catches sight of Andrew Parker, her childhood sweetheart, in the background of a TV news story she feels it’s a sign. If she’d stuck with Andrew everything would have turned out better.

Now she just needs to find him…Join Isobel as she travels from LA to Devon and to a remote Malaysian island in search of true love.

My Thoughts:

I was lucky to receive an advanced copy of this book and I couldn’t wait to dive in. The cover looks really vibrant and attractive which made me want to read it even more. I haven’t read any of Rosie’s books before but I will be now. This book was so funny I loved it. Poor Isobel the main character I did feel for her at some points especially when she is made to dress as a giant prawn in the midday LA  heat but it was quite funny. There were a few cringey moments but all in all a really great read. I look forward to looking out for more of Rosie Blake’s books.

Wedding Bells for Nurse Connie By Jean Fullerton

Wedding Bells for Nurse Connie By Jean Fullerton

jean fullerton

It’s 1948 and the nurses of the East End of London are making the most of life post-war. For Connie in particular, things are looking rosy as she looks forward to planning a future with her sweetheart, Malcolm. But, as many a young bride-to-be has proved, the course of true love never did run smooth and Connie finds herself having to grapple with interfering mothers and Malcolm’s reluctance to set the date.

But while there are many obstacles to overcome before walking down the aisle, at least Connie can relax in the knowledge that she’ll soon be married to the man of her dreams, can’t she?

Life at work isn’t all smooth sailing either. The newly-formed NHS is keeping the nurses of Fry House extremely busy and as ever in the life of a nurse heartbreak lurks at every turn. But there are some new faces to keep things interesting. And one in particular might be the answer to all of Connie’s problems..

My Thoughts:

This is the one of the books from the Nurse Connie series, it can be read as a standalone but I would recommend reading them from the start. I was given this book from Jean the author herself which was such a lovely thing to do. I always find with Jean’s books that they take me longer to read which is not a bad thing, it is just there is some really good information that I want to absorb in and I am fascinated with what life was like in those days. There is a bit of sadness, humour and a romance in this story which will keep you hooked until the end, was sad when I had read the last page but I will definitely be looking forward to the next one.

Catch A Falling Star By Emily Harvale

Catch A Falling Star By Emily Harvale

Catch A Falling Star. A Hideaway Down Novel (Book 2)

Sometimes stars need help to shine. Laurel French is happy – and why wouldn’t she be? She’s young, free and single; she owns The Coffee Hideaway, lives in the prettiest village in East Sussex and is surrounded by friends… even if some of them are a little eccentric. What more could she want? Love? Not Laurel. Love is the last thing Laurel wants to think about… because it’s unrequited. Ned Stelling is in love with someone else. Jamie McDay is miserable.

Hollywood has become a gilded cage. The paparazzi are snapping at his heels, and since he dumped his co-star girlfriend in a spectacularly stupid public display, he’s been dropped from the Vampire series that made him a heart-throb, movie star. Visiting his friend, Gabriel Hardwick will cheer him up.

Hideaway Down may be a bit ‘twee’ but local stunner, Ivy Gilroy could definitely put a permanent smile on Jamie’s face. That’s if he can persuade her to dump her boyfriend, Ned.

My Thoughts:

I couldn’t wait to start reading this book as I am a big fan of Emily Harvale’s books. This one got me back into reading after having a bit of time off. From the moment I started reading this book I felt as though I was there in Hideaway Down. I feel with Emily’s characters as though I know them all personally, it is because she just has a way with her words. In Emily’s books you feel like you can relate to the characters which I like. I am so pleased I have found Emily Harvale as she is such a incredible author. Thank you Emily.

Appleby Farm By Cathy Bramley

Appleby Farm By Cathy Bramley

cathy bramley 2

Freya Moorcroft has wild red hair, mischievous green eyes, a warm smile and a heart of gold. She’s been happy working at the café round the corner from Ivy Lane allotments and her romance with her new boyfriend is going well, she thinks, but a part of her still misses the beautiful rolling hills of her Cumbrian childhood home: Appleby Farm.

Then a phone call out of the blue and a desperate plea for help change everything…

The farm is in financial trouble, and it’s taking its toll on the aunt and uncle who raised Freya. Heading home to lend a hand, Freya quickly learns that things are worse than she first thought. As she summons up all her creativity and determination to turn things around, Freya is surprised as her own dreams for the future begin to take shape.

Love makes the world go round, according to Freya. Not money. But will saving Appleby Farm and following her heart come at a price?

My Thoughts:

Cathy Bramley is a new author to me and I am not sure why I hadn’t read any of her books before as they are wonderful. The cover design looks amazing, I felt like I just wanted to leap in and start reading. I loved the whole concept of Freya helping her family out when they needed her the most and quite literally saving the day.  There are animals which is great as I am a big animal lover and there is romance. I loved this book from start to finish and now want to read all Cathy’s other books. Such a lovely story and I am glad I have found a new author I absolutely love.
