The Long Way Home By Fanny Blake

The Long Way Home By Fanny Blake

A family secret, a mysterious legacy, and a journey that will change everything…

When Isla, a 65-year-old grandmother, is left nothing but an old painting in her mother’s will, while her sisters and aunt inherit the estate, she is devastated. Close to retirement, getting ready to live on her own terms, the last thing she expects at this time of her life is such turmoil. So, to find an explanation for her mother’s rejection, she embarks on a road-trip.

But, right at the last moment, she’s forced to take her sullen – and, in her view, impossible – 14-year-old granddaughter Charlie with her. Cramped together in Isla’s car with her smelly old dog, these ill-assorted travelling companions set off to uncover some shattering and life-changing family truths at the same time as learning to love each other…

My Thoughts:

The cover is so pretty, it reminds me of lazy Summer days and being out on walks in the fresh air. This book is set in the UK but we also see the book go back in time to Paris in the 1950’s. Family, secrets and love and loss are all a big part of how this story is told, really well thought and told characters that really bring the story to life. It is so much more than what the story is really about. Isla is about to take her 14 year old granddaughter on a road trip, but will a 14 year old really want to cooperate with her 65 year old gran? What will they uncover when they embark on this trip of a lifetime?

One magical night in Venice, Didi fell in love. But it ended – and he left without even saying goodbye.

The old spark is still there, but Didi’s determined to ignore it. As manager of a stunning Cotswolds hotel, she’s happy at last, and soon to be married. Anyway, Shay isn’t staying. He’s made a promise to his father. He’s going to keep it. And then he’ll be gone.

But Shay’s return stirs up long-forgotten emotions, and the scandal that led him to leave raises its head once again. It’s time for buried secrets to come to light. And it seems that this was someone’s intention all along . . .

My Thoughts:

I was excited to read this book by Jill Mansell as she is one of my favourite authors, I just find her books are easy going and perfect escapism. Didi is soon to be married but when an old flame Shay turns up unexpectedly her feelings all come back from the past, and so does his. But what made him back then leave so suddenly, will Didi ever find out? what will it mean for her now? Lots of secrets are uncovered and emotions are high in this gripping and satisfying read. It is a feel good story that will make you crave reading another Jill Mansell book.

Still Life By Sarah Winman

Still Life By Sarah Winman

1944, in the ruined wine cellar of a Tuscan villa, as the Allied troops advance and bombs fall around them, two strangers meet and share an extraordinary evening together.

Ulysses Temper is a young British soldier, Evelyn Skinner is a sexagenarian art historian and possible spy. She has come to Italy to salvage paintings from the wreckage and relive memories of the time she encountered EM Forster and had her heart stolen by an Italian maid in a particular Florentine room with a view.

These two unlikely people find kindred spirits in each other and Evelyn’s talk of truth and beauty plants a seed in Ulysses’ mind that will shape the trajectory of his life – and of those who love him – for the next four decades.

My Thoughts:

After reading this book I can’t wait to delve into more of Sarah’s books. I found this story fascinating and even more so by the way Sarah is a great storyteller. It is a moving and poignant story that explores love in it’s many forms. I wanted to cherish the words longer than I needed too just because it is such a rich story which is set in the 1940’s. A British Soldier and a art historian meet, will romance blossom? what will happen to both of them especially at this moment in time. A beautifully told story that you will just want to cherish.

As Emma starts to settle in to her childhood home, she finds herself loving village life – much to her surprise. When the opportunity to get involved in the running of the summer fete comes her way, before she knows it she’s embracing jam making, cake baking and bunting. And with romance brewing, Emma begins to doubt the glamorous life in London that she worked so hard to build . . .

My Thoughts:

This book made me dream of the warmer weather and being outside more with the sun on your face. Emma’s story is a relatable one whatever age you are. She thinks she is happy, she isn’t tied down to any one, she has a good job, but she is missing something. When her dad becomes unwell, she decides to go and spend time with him in the Village she grew up in. Can she find the missing part she desperately needs? there is a whole load of romance, cakes and a Village community coming together. Will Emma get her happy ever after? I really enjoyed reading Emma’s story, it is heartfelt and uplifting when we all need a bit of escapism.

The River Between Us By Liz Fenwick

The River Between Us By Liz Fenwick

Following the breakdown of her marriage, Theo has bought a tumbledown cottage on the banks of the river Tamar which divides Cornwall and Devon. The peace and tranquillity of Boatman’s Cottage, nestled by the water, is just what she needs to heal.

Yet soon after her arrival, Theo discovers a stash of hidden letters tied with a ribbon, untouched for more than a century. The letters – sent from the battlefields of France during WW1 – tell of a young servant from the nearby manor house, Abbotswood, and his love for a woman he was destined to lose.

As she begins to bring Boatman’s Cottage and its gardens back to life, Theo pieces together a story of star-crossed lovers played out against the river, while finding her own new path to happiness.

My Thoughts:

The cover of this book is stunning, it made me think of the Summer when the sun is setting and the quietness of the river. Liz the author is good at describing things so that you feel as though you are there, Theo goes to live at Boatmans cottage when her marriage fails and it is not as idyllic as she first thought, the place needs a good clean and decorating. But this is the place that in time is just what she needs and time to heal. She soon finds some treasures, a bunch of hand written letters that haven’t been touch for a very long time, she sets out on a mission with the help of a few of the villagers to discover who the people were that had written the letters, she uncovers some things that she never would of imagined. I liked how the book progresses, you feel as though you are on the journey with Theo, I couldn’t wait to find out what the letters entailed. Also hearing about what Theo does to the cottage inspired me and I enjoyed reading about that part of it too. I can’t wait to read Liz’s next book.

Sorrow and Bliss By Meg Mason

Sorrow and Bliss By Meg Mason

Everyone tells Martha Friel she is clever and beautiful, a brilliant writer who has been loved every day of her adult life by one man, her husband Patrick. A gift – her mother once said – not everybody gets.

So why is everything broken? Why is Martha – on the edge of 40 – friendless, practically jobless and so often sad? And why did Patrick decide to leave?

Maybe she is just too sensitive, someone who finds it harder to be alive than most people. Or maybe – as she has long believed – there is something wrong with her. Something that broke when a little bomb went off in her brain, at 17, and left her changed in a way that no doctor or therapist has ever been able to explain.

Forced to return to her childhood home to live with her dysfunctional, bohemian parents (but without the help of her devoted, foul-mouthed sister Ingrid), Martha has one last chance to find out whether a life is ever too broken to fix – or whether, maybe, by starting over, she will get to write a better ending for herself.

My Thoughts:

This is a very easy story to read, as you go through the story you will find gut wrenching problems that are dealt with. The torment is there for everyone to see but is written in well. There are many laughs in this book, which seems weird when there is so much pain but Meg has written it brilliantly so that they both work well alongside each other. The characters all felt real and I didn’t want the story to end. It is a little different but it is a really good story.

My Thoughts:

I am a big fan of Veronica’s books so couldn’t wait to delve into this one. It is a little different but no less just as good. There are eight short stories all involving the beach, there are also some wonderful beach inspired recipes that made my mouth water just reading them. I am definitely going to be making some very soon. This book is a perfect pick me up that I feel that every beach hut should have. It made me crave being near the sea and eating fish and chips from the wrapper huddled up in a beach hut. I would love to see more books like this as it is a rare treat to read something like this.

And some of the other entertainers have nicknamed him the Grim Reaper, because whenever Sebastian is on board, people go missing.

After escaping from prison, Josef Werner is driven to a safe hideout in the Didim area of Turkey. He sets up his base in the beautiful bay of Akbuk, and buys two isolated villas high on a hill overlooking the bay. But Werner has been followed by a private eye named Cortez, and the premises are bugged.

Max Cutler is an All-American boy: tall, blond and handsome, with a sharp wit and a keen eye for female company. A stand-out student at law school, he is immediately recruited into the Secret Service, to protect America’s interests overseas. Max is in Europe, breaking up a violent counterfeiting ring in Germany, when he hears that his baby sister Elisa has disappeared from a cruise ship in Alaska.

My Thoughts:

I loved the sound of the plot line for this book, it is set on a cruise ship, people start to go missing but what is happening to them? there is all these different characters some with shady pasts that you wouldn’t want to meet on a dark night and others that have secrets, you never really know anyone. It is about three different men who cross into different countries, but their stories are intertwined throughout the book. I liked how the book flowed through out, I was never really sure what was going to happen which I liked and I found the ending brought everything together nicely.

Run Walk Crawl – Getting Fit in my Forties By Tim Lebbon

Run Walk Crawl – Getting Fit in my Forties By Tim Lebbon

At forty-one I was overweight and unfit. As I turned 50 I was thirty pounds lighter, having spent my fifth decade training for, and racing multiple Ironmans, marathons, and other crazy adventures. This account of that fitness journey through my forties includes broken bones, severe chafing, regular cursing, rubber and lycra, an element of masochism … and cake.

My Thoughts:

This is very different to what I would normally read but wanted to give it a try. I really enjoyed reading about Tim’s journey through it all. I found it very inspiring and the story is an incredible one how he goes from couch potato to running Ironmans. I have seen Ironmans on the tv and they look tough so I want to say well done to Tim for doing something awe inspiring and hopefully from writing this book he can help and inspire more people to get out there and do something worthwhile. There is a mixture of funny parts and also parts that really made me wince. But I am really glad I read this book, it is a short read too. But it has inspired me.

But she’ll have to throw off the burden of shame if she is to honour that sixteen-year-old girl whose dreams lie frozen in time.

Can Bess face her past, finally come clean to Mario, and claim the love she has longed to fully experience all these years?

My Thoughts:

I thoroughly enjoyed this story about Bessie, we see Bessie as a young girl and then in the present as a older lady. Amanda’s books have a way that draws you in and makes you feel involved in the story. I liked how it goes from the past and present as we really see how Bessie grows up, I loved all the characters and the well thought out plot, it was a heartbreaking story that had me in tears as you truly never know what goes on behind closed doors. I think the story taught me that actions do have consequences and that you never really know what people are going through unless you are going through the same thing. Amanda’s books are brilliant and I look forward to the next book.
