How Hard Can It Be? By Allison Pearson

How Hard Can It Be? By Allison Pearson

Kate Reddy is counting down the days until she is fifty, but not in a good way.

Fifty, in Kate’s mind, equals invisibility, and she’s caught between her traitorous hormones, unknowable teenage children and ailing parents.

She’s back at work after a break, now that her husband Rich has dropped out of the rat race to master the art of mindfulness. But just as Kate is finding a few tricks to get by, her old client and flame Jack reappears – complicated doesn’t even begin to cover it…

My Thoughts:

If you want something a bit light hearted and very funny then this is the book for you. I found myself really warming to Kate and feeling sorry for what she has to go through with her kids and husband. I did feel as though I could slightly relate to her with her husband and his Bike collection. It really made me chuckle. I loved the story and what Kate gets up to and I shall be looking out for more of Allison Pearson’s books in the future.

Anyone for Seconds? By Laurie Graham

Anyone for Seconds? By Laurie Graham

Life has been going downhill for ex-TV chef Lizzie Partridge ever since she spectacularly ended her television career by throwing a chocolate mousse at the host of Midlands This Morning. Her partner Tom has left her, Nigella and Jamie have got the cookery world sewn up, and now her cookery column – her last bit of work – has been axed. Surely the only way is up from here?

In a desperate bid for sympathy and attention she runs away, from the gas bill and the mouse under the sink, and in wet and wintry Aberystwyth she experiences a brush with her past and a glimmer of new prospects. And when her nephew’s girlfriend – a TV producer – has the bright idea to reunite her with her former nemesis and target of the mousse attack in a new show, it seems like things could be going Lizzie’s way again after all!

My Thoughts:

Even though this is a sequel to perfect meringues you can still read it as a standalone like I did, though I will definitely now want to read the first one. This is the story about Lizzie who is an ex TV chef and the reasons why she is now an ex. She decides to head to Aberystwyth to drown her sorrows and look for other work and from there on in the future seems a bit brighter for her. Lots of different characters make for some great comedy.

Take Nothing With You By Patrick Gale

Take Nothing With You By Patrick Gale

1970s Weston-Super-Mare and ten-year-old oddball Eustace, an only child, has life transformed by his mother’s quixotic decision to sign him up for cello lessons. Music-making brings release for a boy who is discovering he is an emotional volcano. He laps up lessons from his young teacher, not noticing how her brand of glamour is casting a damaging spell over his frustrated and controlling mother.

When he is enrolled in holiday courses in the Scottish borders, lessons in love, rejection and humility are added to daily practice.

Drawing in part on his own boyhood, Patrick Gale’s new novel explores a collision between childish hero worship and extremely messy adult love lives.

My Thoughts:

I have not read any of Patrick’s books before and thought the plot of this book sounded interesting. We follow the life of Eustace who is about to become an adult and how music helps him and how he discovers what being an adult really is about.

My Thoughts:

Wow what a read, if you want a powerful read that will really make you think, this is the one for you. It is a compulsive and gripping read that will quite literally leave you speechless. After reading this story I will no way forget about it and I have never read anything like this before and never will.

August 1939

At peaceful Summerhill, orphaned Maddy hides from the world and the rumours of war. Then her adored sister Georgina returns from a long trip with a new friend, the handsome Victor. Maddy fears that Victor is not all he seems, but she has no idea just what kind of danger has come into their lives…

When chance takes her to Summerhill, she’s drawn into the mystery of what happened there decades before. And the past reaches out to touch her in ways that could change everything…

My Thoughts:

If you love a good old romance then this is the book for you, a perfect read for the beach or if you want a read that is pure escapism. I love how it differs from the past to the present. What it was like in 1939 is  incredible to read about and the author has clearly done some fantastic research.

Sunset over the Cherry Orchard By Jo Thomas

Sunset over the Cherry Orchard By Jo Thomas

It’s time for Beti Winter to dance to her own beat.

After three failed engagements Beti is in desperate need of a fresh start. What better place than the sun-drenched hills of southern Spain?

But it’s not all sangria and siestas. Beti finds work on an old Andalusian cherry farm where there are cherries to be picked, trees to be watered and her fiery boss, Antonio, to win over.

As the sun toasts her skin, Beti finds herself warming to the Spanish way of life. Embracing the art of flamenco, she discovers there is much to learn from the dance of passion. She just has to let loose and listen to the rhythm of her heart.

My Thoughts:

There is something about reading a Jo Thomas that just puts a smile on your face. Jo’s covers for her books are always so summery and vibrant. This story we follow Beti who needs a new start somewhere different. So she goes to Spain I mean I was jealous right there but when she starts work on a Cherry farm well, I could almost smell and taste those sweet cherries. Lots of food involved, a very nice Spanish man called Antonio and a well thought out plot of a story.

11 Missed Calls By Elisabeth Carpenter

11 Missed Calls By Elisabeth Carpenter

Here are two things I know about my mother:
1. She had dark hair, like mine.
2. She wasn’t very happy at the end.

Anna has always believed that her mother, Debbie, died 30 years ago on the night she disappeared.

But when her father gets a strange note, she realises that she’s never been told the full story of what happened that night on the cliff.

Confused and upset, Anna turns to her husband Jack – but when she finds a love letter from another woman in his wallet, she realises there’s no-one left to help her, least of all her family.

And then a body is found…

My Thoughts:

I liked the whole idea of the story line however for me it didn’t grip me enough. There are lots of characters and I kept of becoming confused about who was who. It did intrigue me where this story line could go so carried on reading and was surprised to find the ending was quite good. It was good how it all wraps up in the end.

Don’t let them catch you…

A Deadly Hunt
DS ‘Heck’ Heckenburg has been tasked with retrieving one of the UK’s most wanted men. But the trail runs cold when Heck discovers a video tape showing the fugitive in a fight for his life. A fight he has no chance of winning.

A Dangerous Game
Heck realises that there’s another player in this game of cat and mouse, and this time, they’ve not just caught the prize: they’ve made sure no one else ever does.

A Man Who Plays With Fire
How far will Heck and his team go to protect some of the UK’s most brutal killers? And what price is he willing to pay?

My Thoughts:

This is book 7 in the Detective Mark Heckenburg series but you can read it as a standalone which I did. I do want to read the other books though. This book is non stop, I felt as though I would have to dragged away from it as I couldn’t stop reading. I found the plot different and ingenious and such a compulsive read.

SEE NO EVIL

Eyes missing, two bodies lie deep in the forest near a remote Swedish town.

HEAR NO EVIL

Tuva Moodyson, a deaf reporter on a small-time local paper, is looking for the story that could make her career.

SPEAK NO EVIL

A web of secrets. And an unsolved murder from twenty years ago.

Can Tuva outwit the killer before she becomes the final victim? She’d like to think so. But first she must face her demons and venture far into the deep, dark woods if she wants to stand any chance of getting the hell out of small-time Gavrik.

My Thoughts:

After reading the first chapter I took an instant liking to the main character called Tuva, I found her a brave and fearless woman. There are a few red herrings which makes you think who is the actual killer. I found the first half a bit slow but through the middle onwards it got better. I didn’t see who the killer was either so that good. I will be intrigued to see what Tuva gets up to in the next book.

Sometimes you have to play a part to realise who you really are…

Nina has always dreamed of being a star. Unfortunately her agent thinks she’s more girl-next-door than leading lady and her acting career isn’t going quite as planned. Then, after a series of very public blunders and to escape a gathering storm of paparazzi, Nina is forced to flee from London.

Her plan is to lay low with a friend in Devon, in beautiful Brightside Cove. But soon Nina learns that more drama can be found in a small village than on a hectic television set.

And when a gorgeous man (and his adorable dog) catch her eye, it’s not long before London and showbiz start to lose their appeal. Will Nina choose to return to the bright lights or has she met her match in Brightside Cove?

My Thoughts:

Cathy’s books just get better and better and I am always excited when the next one comes out. This story evolves around Nina who needs to get away for a bit because of some issues regarding her work as an actress. I love the way the story unfolds and I found it such a delightful read. Pure escapism.
