What happens when the past comes back to kill you?

When DCI Anna Tate is called to the gruesome discovery of a dead woman found on Barnes Common, she is plunged into a high‐profile investigation involving a prominent MP. London is baying for blood – but is there more to Holly’s death than at first meets the eye?

Meanwhile, the hunt is on for Anna’s missing daughter Chloe, who vanished ten years ago when her father kidnapped her. The case has been cold for what feels like forever – but a phone call brings a brand new lead…

Can Anna solve the murder case whilst dealing with her own personal demons? Or is someone from the past planning to get in her way?

My Thoughts:

This is book two in the DCI Anna Tate Crime Thriller series and these books just keep getting better and better. There are two stories in this book that run along side each other both involving DCI Anna Tate. I found I was engrossed in this book as it was gripping and well thought out. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Sunshine, cider and family secrets…

Dragonfly Farm has been a home and a haven for generations of Melchiors – arch rivals to the Culbones, the wealthy family who live on the other side of the river. Life there is dictated by the seasons and cider-making, and everyone falls under its spell.

For cousins Tabitha and Georgia, it has always been a home from home. When a tragedy befalls their beloved Great-Uncle Matthew, it seems the place where they’ve always belonged might now belong to them…

But the will reveals that a third of the farm has also been left to a Culbone. Gabriel has no idea why he’s been included, or what his connection to the farm – or the Melchiors – can be.

As the first apples start to fall for the cider harvest, will Dragonfly Farm begin to give up its secrets?

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed reading this book, there is a feud going on between two rivals the Melchiors and the Culbones but secrets are dragged up from the past and can they ever forgive and forget? I liked the dynamics between the characters and was intrigued to see what Gabriel would bring to the table and what connected him to the farm. There is a lot of mystery involved in this story and it makes for a really enjoyable read.

Escape to the Scottish Highlands where a tiny bookshop perches on the edge of a loch

Zoe is a single mother, sinking beneath the waves trying to cope by herself in London. Hari, her gorgeous little boy is perfect in every way – except for the fact that he just doesn’t speak, at all. When her landlord raises the rent on her flat, Zoe doesn’t know where to turn.

Then Hari’s aunt suggests Zoe could move to Scotland to help run a bookshop. Going from the lonely city to a small village in the Highlands could be the change Zoe and Hari desperately need.

Faced with an unwelcoming boss, a moody, distant bookseller named Ramsay Urquart, and a band of unruly children, Zoe wonders if she’s made the right decision. But Hari has found his very first real friend, and no one could resist the beauty of the loch glinting in the summer sun. If only Ramsay would just be a little more approachable…

My Thoughts:

I always find with a Jenny Colgan book that they are pure escapism. All her books tackle relatable issues but they are written sensitively and you don’t feel as though you are alone. I loved how this story came together and in a sense to me came alive. I felt as though I wanted to be there in the thick of it to help Zoe out. Jenny Colgan’s books just keep getting better and better.

A year after the kiss that brought them together in a snowy train-station doorway, Maya and James are embarking on another journey this time around the world.

The trip starts promisingly, with an opulent and romantic Indian wedding. But as their travels continue, Maya fears that ‘love at first sight’ might not survive trains, planes and tuk tuks, especially when she realises that what she really wants is a baby. Trouble is, James doesn’t feel the same.

Meanwhile Maya’s best friend Nena is struggling with the reality of being a new parent, little knowing that her friend risks losing the love of her life over her dreams of motherhood.

Can Maya and James navigate their different hopes and dreams to stay together? Or is love at first sight just a myth after all…

My Thoughts:

Even though this is the sequel to The Note, you don’t necessarily have to have read that one first as I didn’t. I love the whole travelling bug that Maya and James embark on, there are ups and downs and relationship struggles but I just wanted Maya and James to be happy. I liked the fact there are three stories all wrapped into one.

Ponden Hall is a centuries-old house on the Yorkshire moors, a magical place full of stories. It’s also where Trudy Heaton grew up. And where she ran away from…

Now, after the devastating loss of her husband, she is returning home with her young son, Will, who refuses to believe his father is dead.

While Trudy tries to do her best for her son, she must also attempt to build bridges with her eccentric mother. And then there is the Hall itself: fallen into disrepair but generations of lives and loves still echo in its shadows, sometimes even reaching out to the present…

My Thoughts:

This is such a beautifully written story that combines past and present into it. I love how refreshing and unique the story is and how it is told with the Bronte sisters making an appearance. All the characters are magical and I was completely taken away with how brilliantly written the story was. This is a book I would recommend over and over again.

Their darkest secrets won’t stay buried forever…

The butchered body of a professor is found in a private office of Exeter University. It is the first in a spate of horrific murders that shakes the city to its core.

Who would target a seemingly innocent man, and why? DS Imogen Grey and DS Adrian Miles turn to his students for answers, but their investigation turns up no leads. Someone must know more than they’re letting on…

As the body count rises, the police have to look into the past to uncover the person responsible before it’s too late.

But are they brave enough to face up to the truth?

My Thoughts:

If your after a dark, explosive and gruesome read this is the book for you. The story line was brilliant and exciting, who was the murderer and why did they kill all their victims, you wont believe it. Some of the murders are written in a lot of description so definitely not for the faint hearted. I love a bit of blood and gore and this was right up my street.

How much do you know about the couple next door?

When Emily and Ben move in next door to Dr Burman and his wife Anita, they are keen to get to know their new neighbours. Outgoing and sociable, Emily tries to befriend the doctor’s wife, but Anita is strangely subdued, barely leaving the house, and terrified of answering the phone.

When Emily goes missing a few weeks later, Ben is plunged into a panic. His wife has left him a note, but can she really have abandoned him for another man? Or has Emily’s curiosity about the couple next door led her straight into danger?

My Thoughts:

This book left me stunned for words quite literally. I have never read anything about this subject and was interested to learn and know more. The story was gripping, I knew I would not like Dr Burman straight away and he lived up to my expectations. I read this book in one sitting. It was mesmerizing.

The Girl I used to know By Faith Hogan

The Girl I used to know By Faith Hogan

faith hogan.jpg

Two women. Two very different lives. One unexpected friendship.

Amanda King and Tess Cuffe are strangers who share the same Georgian house, but their lives couldn’t be more different.

Amanda seems to have the perfect life. But the reality is a soulless home, an unfaithful husband and a very lonely heart.

While Tess has spent a lifetime hiding and shutting her heart to love.

But if they can open up to one another, these two women may just learn that sometimes letting go is the first step to moving forward and new friendships can come from the most unlikely situations.

My Thoughts:

I think I have only ready one of Faith’s books before and I was not sure what to expect. I enjoyed the story and the characters were well written, I did find the start a bit slow but once part way through then the story became more alive. The story switches from past to present so we see how the characters evolve over time. I liked this story and will certainly look out for more of Faith’s books.

Two victims. Brutally murdered in their own home. Body parts taken.D.I. Graves is back on the case to face his toughest challenge yet. A case with no motive and no suspect, nothing at all that could explain why someone would kill innocent people in such a way. Then the next victims are discovered.

Another pair of bodies. New body parts taken. Again in their own home. Someone is breaking into houses across the city at night, leaving horror in their wake. It seems to Graves that this could be two serial killers, working together. But how are they choosing their victims? Is any house in London a target? Is anyone safe?

To make matters worse, a journalist is threatening to cause more harm than good with her obsessive push in covering the story to further her career, and someone is targeting Graves personally, seeking revenge against him in relation to an old case. Can Graves keep himself safe long enough to stop the serial killers before they strike again?

My Thoughts:

If your after a creepy, tense and gruesome read this is the one for you. Can D.I Graves work out who the murder is? This is edge of the seat stuff wanting to work out before the D.I who the murder was and why he/she did what they did to the victims. A tense read with a dramatic ending. This is book two in the D.I Graves series.
