The Silence In Between By Josie Ferguson

Lisette is in hospital with her baby boy. The doctors tell her to go home and get some rest, that he’ll be fine.

When she awakes, everything has changed. Because overnight, on 13 August 1961, the border between East and West Berlin has closed. Lisette is trapped in the east, while her baby is unreachable in the west. But this is not the first time she has lived in a divided city.
.
Lisette’s teenage daughter, Elly, has always struggled to understand the distance between herself and her mother. Both have lived for music, but while Elly hears notes surrounding every person she meets, for her mother the music has disappeared. Can Elly now find a way to bridge the silence?

My Thoughts:

This was such a powerful and heart breaking story, when Lisette gives birth in the hospital, she is so in love with her baby boy and cannot believe he is really here. When the doctor tells her to go home and rest little does she realise this would be the last time she sees him. Tragedy strikes when the border between the two cities close and Lisette is on one side and her baby boy is on the other side. Lisette is totally distraught and does not know where to go from here. But Lisette has a older daughter Elly and Elly is determined to try and get her baby brother home and she will risk everything to get her mother to love her again. But will she succeed? it was such a heart breaking and thought provoking story that will bring tears to your eyes. I could not stop thinking about this story and how it affected me deeply.
