Under The Ice By Rachael Blok

Under The Ice By Rachael Blok

It is the week before Christmas and the cathedral city of St Albans is blanketed by snow. But beneath the festive lights, darkness is stirring. The frozen body of a young girl is discovered by the ice-covered lake.

The police scramble for clues. A local woman, Jenny, has had visions of what happened the night of the murder. But Jenny is an exhausted new mother, whose midnight wanderings pull her ever closer to the lake. Can Jenny be trusted? What does she really know?

Then another girl goes missing, and the community unravels. Neighbour turns against neighbour, and Jenny has no idea who to believe. As Christmas Eve approaches, Jenny discovers a secret about her past – and why she could be key to everything…

My Thoughts:

I love the cover of this book it is tense and creepy but also makes you feel slightly cold. I was shocked to see that it is Rachael’s debut novel as it is really good. This is what thrillers are all about, you want to devour it straight away but then you want to cherish the story as you know you will feel sad once it has finished. The story telling was exceptional so much so that the characters are really bought to life. I can’t wait to read the next one from Rachael Blok.

How far would you go to save the ones you love? The first book in a gripping new crime series featuring DCI Anna Tate.

When nine children are snatched from a nursery school in South London, their distressed parents have no idea if they will ever see them again. The community in the surrounding area in shock. How could this happen right under their noses? No one in the quiet suburban street saw anything – or at least that’s what they’re saying.

But DCI Anna Tate knows that nothing is impossible, and she also knows that time is quickly running out. It’s unclear if the kidnappers are desperate for money or set on revenge, but the ransom is going up by £1million daily. And they know that one little boy in particular is fighting for his life.

It’s one of the most disturbing cases DCI Anna Tate has ever worked on – not only because nine children are being held hostage, but because she’s pretty sure that someone close to them is lying…

My Thoughts:

This is a DCI Anna Tate thriller and really in this book there are two stories that run alongside each other. both stories are linked as they are both to do with children being kidnapped. A twisty story that will keep you on the edge of your seats. I think it always does when children are involved as you are hoping for the best outcome. There are a few red herrings along the way. I had no clue and it was a bit of a shock to me what the outcome was.

Don’t Turn Around By Amanda Brookes

Don’t Turn Around By Amanda Brookes

She died.

You’re next.

Now he’s coming for you

Ten years ago, Jen’s cousin Meg killed herself after failing to escape an abusive relationship.

Now, Meg’s ex is back and Jen’s domestic abuse helpline has started getting frightening calls from a girl who knows things about Meg – details that only the dead girl or the man who hurt her could have known…

As Jen starts to uncover the past, someone is determined to stop her. Can she save this young woman from Meg’s fate? Or is history about to repeat itself?

My Thoughts:

I have read one of Amanda’s books before, her storyline’s seem to be intriguing and a little bit different to other books I have read. This one kind of centres around a domestic abuse helpline and we see the web unfold into a haunting tale. I felt that the beginning was a little slow but soon picked up towards the middle.

Our Child of the Stars By Stephen Cox

Our Child of the Stars By Stephen Cox

Molly and Gene Myers were happy, until tragedy blighted their hopes of children. During the years of darkness and despair, they each put their marriage in jeopardy, but now they are starting to rebuild their fragile bond.

This is the year of Woodstock and the moon landings; war is raging in Vietnam and the superpowers are threatening each other with annihilation.

Then the Meteor crashes into Amber Grove, devastating the small New England town – and changing their lives for ever. Molly, a nurse, caught up in the thick of the disaster, is given care of a desperately ill patient rescued from the wreckage: a sick boy with a remarkable appearance, an orphan who needs a mother.

And soon the whole world will be looking for him.

Cory’s arrival has changed everything. And the Myers will do anything to keep him safe.

My Thoughts:

I think the cover of this book looks stunning and you can really see where they got the idea from relating to the story. When reading the plot I was not sure what to expect and I actually thought the story would turn out differently though I am not saying I didn’t like it but for me when a book has sci-fi in it I tend to not really read as I would rather read about real life situations. But that is just my personal opionion others may enjoy this book if you like sci-fi.

SHE TRUSTED THEM WITH HER LIFE

When Anna arrives in the UK, she believes it’s the start of a better life for her and her daughter. But what awaits her is more shocking than anything she could have ever imagined . . .

SHE TRUSTED THEM WITH HER DAUGHTER

DI Harry Powell is investigating a shooting, but the victim has been scared into silence. As Harry struggles to piece together what little information he has, he stumbles upon an operation that may put countless lives across the country at risk.

SHE WAS WRONG

As Anna’s situation grows more dangerous by the day, Harry is forced to push his overstretched team to the limits to find answers. But for one of them, will it already be too late?

My Thoughts:

This is an authentic crime thriller from a real life police detective and you can tell as the writing is very descriptive. There are quite a few characters some of them shady in this book, all of their stories link together. I did find the first part of the book a bit slow but it did pick up pace and the ending was pretty good and tied up lots of loose ends for me. I would read more by this author.

Christmas at Mistletoe Cove By Holly Martin

Christmas at Mistletoe Cove By Holly Martin

christmas at mistletoe coer

Growing up on Hope Island, Eden Lancaster always believed that if you wished hard enough for something, dreams really could come true. But Eden’s greatest wish is also her biggest secret: she has been completely in love with her childhood friend, the charming and attractive Dougie Harrison, for as long as she can remember. And he has no idea.

When Dougie leaves his successful life in New York to return home to Hope Island for good, Eden can’t escape her feelings. Her heart is full of hope that her romantic dreams are finally, at long last, going to come true…

This Christmas could change everything. But can a lifelong friendship really turn into the perfect romance? And will Eden get the happily ever after she’s always wished for?

My Thoughts:

I thought to myself just one more Christmas read and this one was the perfect one to read. I didn’t want to put it down as I felt so engrossed in the story, which is about Eden and her childhood sweetheart Dougie, we see him returning to Hope Island and basically Eden still holds a flame for him and she doesn’t know that he loves her too, ask for a bit of magic and romance at Christmas time and you never know what you may get. I didn’t want this book to end, I wonder if there will be a follow on.

The Guestbook at Willow Cottage By Holly Martin

The Guestbook at Willow Cottage By Holly Martin

guestbook

As landlady of Willow Cottage, the young widow Annie Butterworth is always on hand with tea, sympathy or strong Norfolk cider – whatever her colourful array of guests require. A flick through the messages in the leather-bound cottage guestbook gives a tantalizing glimpse into the lives of everyone who passes through her doors.

This includes Annie herself – especially now celebrity crime writer Oliver Black, is back in town. He might grace the covers of gossip magazines with a different glamorous supermodel draped on his arm every week, but to Annie, he’s always just been Olly, the man who Annie shared her first kiss with.

Through the pages of the Guestbook Annie and Olly, along with all the guests that arrive at the seaside retreat, struggle with love, loss, mystery, joy, happiness, guilt…and the odd spot of naked rambling!

My Thoughts:

If you want a feel good read that is a little bit quirky then this is the book for you. It is a short read and I read it in a day. I love the idea that the story is told through out by people that come and stay at Annie’s cottage. Annie also writes in the guestbook too and we find out some things about her life too. It is a very clever idea and it really works. A delightful and easy read that will no doubt warm your heart.
