The Winter Wedding By Abby Clements

The Winter Wedding By Abby Clements

abby clements

Hazel never set out to be a wedding planner. She was just helping her stressed sister Lila with cakes and décor for her big day. But when Lila and Ollie’s summer ceremony is a runaway success, with guests raving about the food and styling at the pretty venue, word about Hazel’s expertise soon spreads.

But Hazel’s clients expect the very best – she’s promised lawyers Gemma and Eliot a snow-covered castle in the Scottish Highlands, and laidback couple Josh and Sarah a bohemian beach wedding in a Caribbean paradise. But as weather, in-laws and wilful brides conspire against her, can Hazel get two very different couples to walk up two very different aisles to say ‘I do’? And will she find her own happy ending if she does?

My Thoughts:

I treated myself to this book as I really love Abby Clements books. This one was just a fantastic read and I loved every minute of it. The plot may have been predictable but I still wanted to read on. I loved everything about this book, the characters were brilliant and I really warmed to Hazel. I loved Amber as I am a bit of a baker myself and I just loved how the story came together. I look forward to reading more of Abby Clements books in the future.

Resistance is Futile By Jenny T. Colgan

Resistance is Futile By Jenny T. Colgan

Connie’s smart. She’s funny. But she’s only human . . .

As a high-ranking mathematician in a male-dominated field – with bright red hair – Connie’s used to being considered a little unusual.

But she’s nowhere near as peculiar as Luke, who is recruited to work alongside her on a top-secret code breaking project.

Just what is this bizarre sequence they’re studying? It isn’t a solution to the global energy crisis. It isn’t a new wavelength to sell microwave ovens. The numbers are trying to tell them something . . . and it seems only Luke knows what.

The truth is out there. Will Connie dare to find it?

My Thoughts:

I got this as a Christmas present and I am glad I did. I love Jenny Colgan books as it is but this one was a bit different from what Jenny normally writes. I really enjoyed the plot which is about a group of nerdy mathematicians. They have to solve a strange sequence of numbers and try to work out what it is all about. A brilliant read. I loved it.

A Christmas Hideaway A Hideaway Down Novel You can’t hide from Love. Holly Gilroy was devastated when her long-term boyfriend, Paul ran off with Naomi, her best friend. Now Paul and Naomi are back in Hideaway Down for Christmas but Holly has no intention of bumping into the happy couple. Because she can’t let Paul see she’s still in love with him… can she? Gabriel Hardwick is desperate to finish his novel… and avoid his agent, Bryony Dawes – who also happens to be his girlfriend. At least that’s what Bryony’s still telling everyone. Will Gabriel’s decision to spend Christmas alone in a rented holiday cottage finally make Bryony see that it’s over between them? And is that really what Gabriel wants?

But they’re not the only ones with problems this festive season. It’s the coldest winter for years and the villagers and visitors in Hideaway Down are finding warmth in the most unexpected places… and not just from the roaring log fire in the hearth of The Snowdrop Inn.

My Thoughts:

I loved this book, there is just something that I love about all of Emily’s books that are so comforting and warm that I literally get so excited about. The story is about a lovely place called Hideaway Down and the people that live there, this story was mainly based around Holly who I instantly warmed too immediately and I loved the sound of Gabriel too. It did add a bit of magic to my Christmas and I look forward to reading book two.

The Invisible Guardian By Dolores Redondo

The Invisible Guardian By Dolores Redondo

the invisible guardian

This title will be released on January 28, 2016.

A killer at large in a remote Basque Country valley , a detective to rival Sarah Lund, myth versus reality, masterful storytelling – the Spanish bestseller that has taken Europe by storm.

The naked body of a teenage girl is found on the banks of the River Baztán. Less than 24 hours after this discovery, a link is made to the murder of another girl the month before. Is this the work of a ritualistic killer or of the Invisible Guardian, the Basajaun, a creature of Basque mythology?

30-year-old Inspector Amaia Salazar heads an investigation which will take her back to Elizondo, the village in the heart of Basque country where she was born, and to which she had hoped never to return. A place of mists, rain and forests. A place of unresolved conflicts, of a dark secret that scarred her childhood and which will come back to torment her.
Torn between the rational, procedural part of her job and local myths and superstitions, Amaia Salazar has to fight off the demons of her past in order to confront the reality of a serial killer at loose in a region steeped in the history of the Spanish Inquisition.

My Thoughts:

I was given this book for an honest review. Even though it is a thriller I was not left feeling excited about it. It was rather slow paced for me, there was poor translation too. But it was well written and the characters were really descriptive.

the-miniaturist-978144725089001

On an autumn day in 1686, eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman knocks at the door of a grand house in the wealthiest quarter of Amsterdam. She has come from the country to begin a new life as the wife of illustrious merchant trader Johannes Brandt, but instead she is met by his sharp-tongued sister, Marin. Only later does Johannes appear and present her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a cabinet-sized replica of their home. It is to be furnished by an elusive miniaturist, whose tiny creations mirror their real-life counterparts in unexpected ways . . .

Nella is at first mystified by the closed world of the Brandt household, but as she uncovers its secrets she realizes the escalating dangers that await them all. Does the miniaturist hold their fate in her hands? And will she be the key to their salvation or the architect of their downfall?

My Thoughts:

After reading the blurb of this book, I was very intrigued to start reading it. The story is set in 1686 so I enjoyed reading about that era and there are some really interesting characters. I liked all the different things that turned up for the house too. But I didn’t really enjoy it as much as I hoped I would, I just felt as if there were too many unanswered questions at the end.

Without You By Lindsay Detwiler

Without You By Lindsay Detwiler

On the surface, Jenna Landsen has it all…

She’s smart, beautiful, confident, and married to Camden Landsen, who happens to be drop dead sexy and just as successful. But after five long years, all the success in the world hasn’t brought the romantic spark back into her marriage. Jenna fears it never will.

When life gives you lemons, open a bakery and name it Vi’s…

Violet Streiff made the exact mistake her mother warned against—she fell in love with Liam Coffman, a charming finance major. When he left her heartbroken to further his career, Violet drowned her sorrows by opening a bakery, and now relies on Bob, her eighteen-pound cat, for warmth at night instead of a sexy man.

To find love, sometimes you first have to discover yourself…

When Jenna’s job offers an extended trip to New York, she packs her bags and takes a two-month vacation from life. The chance of her marriage surviving looks grim, until the surprise of a lifetime throws a wrench in her plans to stay in the Big Apple for good.

You can bend the rules—but sooner or later they’ll break…

When Violet meets a gloomy but totally drool-worthy guy named Camden in her shop, she’s sure her luck has changed. There’s no denying the chemistry, but he’s married, and that’s a major problem. Violet isn’t a homewrecker. Still, staying away from Camden proves nearly impossible. That is, until his wife comes home.

Two women.
Two men.
Double the chance to find love in the most
unexpected places—or double the chance for disaster.

My Thoughts:

I was given this book for an honest review, after having read Lindsay’s first novel Voice of Innocence, I really was looking forward to this book and it didn’t let me down. It was brilliant, I loved the fact there are two main characters Vi and Jenna and they both have ways as Jenna is a business woman and Vi owns a coffee shop. I felt myself drawn more to Vi than Jenna as I could see myself in her a bit. This story is about two women who are looking for the same thing but have different ways of getting what they want.

A Home For Broken Hearts By Rowan Coleman

A Home For Broken Hearts By Rowan Coleman

home-for-broken-hearts
Is there a cure for a broken heart?

Once upon a time, Ellen Woods had her ‘happily ever after’ moment when she married her beloved Nick. But fifteen years later her husband’s tragic death leaves her alone with their soon-to-become-a-teenager son and a mountain of debt.

On the verge of losing the family home Ellen decides to rent out some rooms, and all too soon a whole host of characters enter her ordered but fragile existence – each with their own messy life in tow. But will this be enough to pull her out of her grief so she can learn to live – and love – again?

My Thoughts:

This was such a brilliant and emotional read, Rowan tackles some serious issues in this book that I think some people will be able to relate to. I loved all the characters, I felt really sorry for Ellen and to see how she struggled day to day, but she got there in the end.

I loved Charlie and thought he sounded such a fantastic boy to help look after his mum and he did make me chuckle a few times too. This was a heart warming story that made me want to read it really quickly so that I could find out what happened to all the characters.

Beautiful Trees By Nik Perring

Beautiful Trees By Nik Perring

In this series we follow the lives of Lucy, Lily and Alexander through words, trees and shapes.

In the second of the series, Beautiful Trees, the stories of Lucy Lily and Alexander unravel amidst the roots and leaves of our favourite trees.

My Thoughts:

This is like a picture book for adults, you get to learn all about the different trees which I found really interesting but you also get to meet Alexander and Lily and see their relationship and their love of trees. It is a very interesting mix and I absolutely loved it. It is a very relaxing read as Nik seems to bring a poetic side to the words. Such a clever way to bring a book to life.

My Thoughts:

I was lucky enough to get a advanced copy of this book. I had never read any of Amanda Brooke’s books before and was intrigued to do so. There are lots of twists and turns in this book but I did guess what was going to happen quite early on. It doesn’t mean I did not enjoy it as I did. The story goes into detail and there is some good descriptions into the characters. I would like to read another of Amanda’s books and see what they are like.
